I'm going to be getting a trainer for some basic help but in the meantime I was wondering if there is are any suggestions for initiating an 11 week old bullie into walking on a leash. He just sits there and I don't want to tug on his neck and possibly hurt him. Should I try a harness first or is that a bad idea...?
Thanks!

no prob!
they have taught Audrey a lot, and their little sister.

My Audrey was the same way
she did NOT pull, she refused to budge. We used a harness because I couldn't pull on her neck. To get her to walk, I'd put something really exciting in my hand, like her ball, and she would follow me. The BEST thing though that snapped Audrey out of her reluctance to walk on a leash was my neighbor's little boy. He was about 6 or 7 and his little brother was 4 or 5. The older one LOVES Audrey and the younger one would tag along wherever his brother went. I would give him some of Audrey's favorite dog treats, which he would put in his pocket that was right about her nose level, I would hold the leash and start to walk, and he would walk right next to me and give her treats and talk to her, basically distracting her from the fact that she was attached to the leash. It made the whole process a lot of fun for all of us. It didn't take her long to figure out being on a leash wasn't so bad.

Re: Any advice for teaching puppy to walk on a leash?
Great advice...! I'll give it a shot and see if I can get him to follow the neighbor's dog. By the way...your pup is stunning. What brand of food do you use?!
Thanks!

re:treats
just an FYI... if you have a Costco, I noticed the other day they are carrying jerky (I saw duck and chicken) for dogs that only has duck (or chicken) and vegetable cellulose.... I am getting Chloe some today... bet they are yummy (ummmm, but I'm not trying them :0)

Re: Any advice for teaching puppy to walk on a leash?
I don't like harness's at all. They promote pulling. Let the puppy get used to a collar first. Then add a leash and go in the home where they want to then when you get outside bribe with treats and toys. Do you have an older dog or could you borrow a friends? the easiest way by far is to have a puppy folllow an adult.

I use outside.........
dehrydrated duck most of the time..
and sometimes use dehyrdrated chicken or liver
the dehyrdrated treats have the benefit of keeping much better...
break up the treats smaller too...
you can also get a small roll of natural balance it is usually a hit too..just get a small roll to start off with..cut it very tiny...small small pieces..dogs do not know the difference so cut they very small.
inside the house I use other things but outside things ONLY the best
it works best if you find a good treat for both type of things that you do
for walking use ONE TREAT type
for potty training another treat type..
the dog catches on very fast with this....
another thing that I do is carry treats in my pockets all the time..LOL
one kind in one pocket
another kind in the other pocket so I have them ready for a fast treat
with puppies you need to treat them as soon as they do what you want..them to do..
goodluck
This worked for us...braunschweiger and the "I insist method" wi
a step-in harness. The harness holds them between their front legs and under their chest. I have never used collars because of the stress to their airways. We go harness-less unless on a road trip to the vet or pet store. Mozie wouldn't budge at 5 months when we got him, so we used the harness and a bit of braunschweiger to lure him when he'd balk. Also, I would lift him by the harness handle and keep him from sitting as I inched forward with a treat. Once he figured out he was not going to be in danger (LOL), he walked on leash. They really are stubborn. When he realized I could move him when he didn't want to, he would just get up and walk when I'd approach him to "help" him along.

Wow! That is one cute Baby!
The other posters are giving you good advice. When Dolly was a pup, I hooked the leash on her & just let her walk around the house, etc. dragging it so she'd get used to it. Then use treats & lots of praise & it won't take long before he learns.

One word.....TREATS......BULDOGS DON'T WORK FOR FREE
Try anything good other than the regular ones you normally give. I have regular milk bones as everyday treats and then some expensive freeze dried treats for when they do something amazing or if I am training them. The only way I got Stoli to learn to lay was with small pieces of hot dogs. He lays now with other treats but sometimes they need that extra motivation. Good Luck!

soo cute..glad you can post pics NOW..very cute PIC...
I used a harness on both of bullies in the start on a leash
although some people on here have used a collar and had great luck too
what I did was put the harness on them inside the house a bit more often to get used to that
and when they were walking around me and close ..I put the leash on and got them used to that as well inside
OUT we went. if they tried to pull and were not responding. I just called it quits and went back home and tried another day.
they got the idea pretty fast out there for walking...I brought along treats and gave them a treat here and there and it worked out good.
something you can try is to keep the treats for walking..NOT what you use in the house..something very special outside. that is what I did anyhow..
the same with housebreaking. I never use the same treats in the house as for outside housebreaking. I use the better ones outside..something very yummy ..so they get the idea faster.
just some thoughts
both of my bullies are awesome on a leash and walk great
haha
Remi used to do that same exact thing!! we'd get to the end of the driveway and PLOP. down he'd go. and he wouldn't budge. I then started bringing beef jerky dog treats with me. to lure him out. I'd stick it infront of his nose, then pull it towards where i wanted him to walk, he'd start walkng, i'd give him a bit of treat. he keeps walking, i give him a bit more. eventually you'll be able to fade out the treats.

good luck!

Re: Any advice for teaching puppy to walk on a leash?
Following an adult is THE BEST way to go!! Thanks for the compliments on my pup. She is eating Natural balance now, actulally all the dogs here are. the fish grain free variety. Before that she was on crappy, but worked very well for us, Pedigree. You want to put your Bullie on a low protein food. Try for 21% or under, especially for a male. they are a large boned breed in a compact body. Low protein is key in making sure they grow at a nice steady pace and for good development. Bulldog puppies don't need puppy food! good Luck on your walks!! Keep it short and fun at first!!

I agree!
Take loads of time and patience, some very good treats (fresh meat, some pieces of steak, freshly boiled chicken, anything that makes him move) and place him on the floor.
Sit on your knees, and ask your puppy to come, don't pull, just invite him to come with a nice high voice. The moment he starts to move, praise him like he won the world cup! When he comes to you, feed him one of his yummy treats. Then you back up one step, again ask him to come and the moment he starts moving praise him with your voice and when he comes to you give him the tread.
This is enough for one time.
Do this a few time per day, before he gets his food and he'll improve quickly!
Have fun,
Ineke
ps and yes, he'll learn to walk on leash....
