Our 2.5 year old appears to have a good case of the itchy allergies going. He's licking his paws constantly, scratching up hot spots and his skin is just generally PINK around the mouth. We've always known he has allergies but the appear to be getting worse. We would like to switch him to a super-hypo allergenic dog food (he's currently on Eukanuba Lamb & Rice). Any Suggestions?
Sounds Familiar!! (long)
Allergies are such a pain to deal with! Both of my bullys have allergies, my females are more contact/air-borne (with some food) while my male has both. The first step is to find out what exactly is causing the reaction (easier said than done).

Emma is allergic to corn, and soy (not to mention a bunch more)so I put her on an all natural food (Solid Gold was my choice). All was well with her. Most dogs seem to be allergic to the fillers used in dog foods like corn, soy, rice, etc.
Luke on the other hand has much more severe allergies, which I have to really keep an eye on b/c he has a compromised immune system. I had the allergy test done on him, and he doesn't tolerate many protein sources, and is a VERY finicky eater (he had to be put on allergy shots). He has been on the Go Natural (all natural chicken base)but we are transitioning to a fish and sweet potato food right now. Luke is all around itchy, but tends to mutilate himself if he has the chance. Some vets recommend prednisone for allergies to break the "itch cycle" but b/c of Lukes immune system it is not an option for us. He will be starting his allergy shots again as soon as his serum is made, in the meantime he gets benadryl to help with some of the itching.
There is a good article at http://www.dog.com/vet/dermatology/01.html
which discusses the different kinds of allergies and their symptoms. Feel free to email me and I can provide you more details on my experiences.
