Advice needed------PLEASE read....

Hi..Bubba has been licking the air nonstop. It started about 2-3 months ago and it was notso bad because he pretty much did it alot in the past when he had allergies or tail pocket issues. But lately it has been driving me crazy and I don't know what it could be.
He went to the vet December 7 and she ran a complete physical along with blood work and everything came back fine.
When Bubba licks, he just licks the air, kinda like a person with dentures does when they take them out. He just licks and licks, not so much like the bulldogs do in the videos when they have head tremmors, he just cant stop smacking his gums, he literally just smsacks his mouth like he is trying to swallow something and its stuck in his mouth....he does it all the time lately and I he has woken me up doing it in the middle of the night a few times. Could this be his way of displaying pain? If he is hurting? His outsides are fine, I just cannnot figure it out. He also has bad breath. I noticed when prior to being diagnosed with intestinal ulcers, he had bad breath. I started giving him one pepcid a day just incase it was his ulcers coming back, but when he has his ulcers he was vomitting all the time and he hasn't vomitted in a long long time. PLEASE!!! help me!! I just paid over $200 a few weeks ago for the vet to tell me he was fine. I cannot afford another visit. I would like some advice so that if I do go back to the vet I can tell the vet what to look for.....Sorry I didnt post on the medical board but it takes so long to get any advice and I won't be able to check back tomrrow...Thank you. oh....his eating and drinking reamains the same and his bowel movements ect are normal. He has been tiring easily lately. Thanks

also, we knew something was wrong b/c he refused his pm milkbone

we immediately took him to the e.r. you know something is wrong with a bully if he won't eat:)

my first thought is teeth too. esp. if he has bad breath... farc

in his gums. its a constant problem, and he even lost a tooth b/c one got infected.

Have you checked his ears?

One of my dogs did that when she had an ear infection.

That's almost always an itch they can't reach

Check tail pocket, ears, nose, teeth, and back. You can sometimes find the right spot by scratching those areas...the tongue will go nuts when you get to the right spot, and sometimes the legs will do the happy scratch to let you know you've got the spot.

Amy is right....over cleaning will cause more

problems than not cleaning enough sometimes! I would try this.....

If you have a spray nozzle on a sink somewhere....even the kitchen sink though you might not like the idea of putting him in there! Anyway, use the spray nozzle with luke warm water and spray the tail pocket out really well. Use a gentle antibacterial hand or dish soap and put some on your fingers...get up in the tail pocket really well with the soap. Clean all of the area that you can, make sure to remove dead hair while you are at it. Spray clean several times and make sure no soapy residue is left at all. I use paper towels to dry...they absorb better I think. You can use a regular towel, but make certain the pocket is all the way dry. I have taken a blow dryer on low and made sure the pocket was dry! Can't be too careful!

After the pocket is dry, use the Gold Bond powder. Only do this a couple times a week, if even that often. I clean Sophies pocket every other week now and she is fine with that. I used to clean it everyday with baby wipes, but that only served to irritate the tail pocket rather than make it better. When I started doing the routine I have now, it was a matter of a couple days and the air licking stopped and the butt on the carpet itching stopped too! She had been fine since!

Could be hairls lodged in his gums...

check for hair stuck in the creases of the roof of his mouth, in the little pocket behind his upper front teeth, between teeth, under upper lip, and at the gum line of all teeth.

Use an eyeliner brush to sweep across the crevices in the roof of his mouth and the pocket right behind his front upper teeth.

Best way to do it is for you to sit in a chair and sit him in front of you on the floor facing away. Wrap your legs around him and lift up his chin toward your chest and open his mouth to search for lodged food or hairs.

Roxy gets tufts of hair in the crevice behind her front teeth. It is stinky. You can dip the small brush you use into watered down Listerine. (don't use it full strength because it would burn.)

The bad breath makes me think it is a teeth or gums issue.

If he has hairs between his teeth or sticking out at the gum line, you can pull those out with blunt tweezers.

That would be my guess, too!

Bulldogs can't lick their hineys and most of them have fairly tight tails--even a little moisture under there can "tickle". Try cleaning with a baby wipe, then drying & dusting underneath with Gold Bond Powder (works great if you put the GB Powder in a ketsup or hair dye type squeeze bottle with a small tip)

u sure it's not a behavior issue? OCD?

worth looking into if there are no health issues

if he hardly eats

than I wonder if his stomach is hurting him? have you ever tried a really bland food for a while, like hambuger and rice to see if he likes it better?

Keep it dry

Rather than destin. Dry it well and put some gold bond powder in there if you have to put anything at all. Sometimes over cleaning is not so good.
Good Luck

When Spanky does this, it usually means....

he has an upset stomach, usually from his stomach being empty. I have started giving him some bread before bed to soak up some of the excess bile and phlegm that he produces during the night. That was a recommendation I found on this forum and it has seemed to help. Sounds like your fellow does not eat much, so keeping his belly comfortable may be a challenge.

I hope your sweet guy feels better soon. I know how upsetting it is to worry about these precious ones, and feel like you can't do anything to help.

cut her meals into smaller meals remember that...

and then something commerical for her stomach..
to coat it..
might even had been peptno...
she was grabbing at the air all the time..
salvia all over the place
scared the crap out of me
her was caused from a drug reaction that she was on for worms..
that is what started it..
once the drug was out of her system..she was much better and back to her old self..

does he take some meds that might upset his tummy
I would think that yogurt for a dog with an upset tummy would be a good thing too to use..I used some on Bella as well

Janice Toby and Betsy's picture

Toby licks like that when his nose gets really dry

I think it bothers him and he is trying to moisten it himself. I will put some aquafor or bag balm on his nose and it usually stops.

He has also done the licking thing when his tail pocket was icky, but that's not very often.

Janice

What did you do help her?

Did you feed her something? or give her meds?

I had the same issue with Bella too...and it was.......

an upset tummy
she was licking into space and saliva all over the floor..

He has ulcers about a year ago.....

I hope they arent coming back. thanks

[linked image]

licking air..

usually when they are just air licking or "smacking" their lips it's a sign of nausea.

wow that makes alot of sense! He does salivate alot

when he does that...Wow thank you! I have been giving him pepcid, the vet said one a day to help the ulcers...He is such a picky eater, he only eats a few bites a day and does not really eat a whole bowl at a time....

[linked image]

hi Deborah

we had a quiet Christmas, it was ok. How was yours? How is the gang?

[linked image]

Thank you. I will check his mouth. he is not

scooting or anything like he has done when his tail is bugging him. He has a VERY tight tail pocket and its reall hard to get in there, I have to put deistin on my fingers and rub it up there in order to get it in there good. Thank you!

[linked image]

No she didnt really check his mouth

She was more concerned about his eyes....his eyes were goopy and teary and she checked him for dry eye and something else (cant remember) and those tests came back fine. I will try to check it when I get home...thanks!

[linked image]

Good point....I have been cleaning his tail

pocket and when I do he smacks alot so tha may be it. I will put desitin in it when I get home and see if that helps....Thanks!

[linked image]

I swithced his food for minute!

Too the lo calorie natural balance, but the licking started and i thought it was the food so I took it back and he went back on the natural balance fish and potatoe. I have not fully paid the vet yet for his lat visit so I have not found him a new one yet sad.gif

[linked image]

Thank you...It worries me that he might be in pain

But he seems fine other than the licking. I wondered if it was his teeth too.

Bernata and Angels Lily and Chester's picture

Are you sure he is licking rather than "smacking lips"...if so..

then I suspect his stomach is upset. My Lily, when her belly is upset, does that and she also salivates a lot at that time, but not necessary all the time. What helps is to keep giving them small meals more frequently so that belly is not empty for too long. I also learned to keep a few small cookies by my bed to give her if this happens at night. try adding so fiber to his diet, pumpkin puree would be good or butternut squash puree from can would work. You can even add Metamucil to it. Give him a big kiss from us. Hope he gets better, but try this first. With what you described...ulcers, clean vet visit, I suspect this might be it.

I am sure you checked the tail poket since

you have been down that road.. right? It could also be a bad tooth, have you looked for fleas? Is he rubbing his bottom at all or turning circles while sitting? Check his gum line way up where things can get stuck to make sure he hasn't lodged something in his gum. Keep us posted :O(

Did the vet check his mouth really carefully for...

any stray hairs or other objects? We had a lhasa once that had a paperclip wrapped around his back tooth and it made him crazy until we found it.

He may have an itch

Probably an itchy tail pocket or anal glands may need to be expressed?????

did you find a new vet yet?

I'm sorry I have no advice other than keep giving him the pepcid. Maybe the ulcers are back and it hasn't reached the vomiting stage yet. Poor Bubba! Did you switch his food?
