Advice? Bubba is refusing to eat...

I think b/c he does not want to go poop. This is our first winter in Boston (we used to live in CA and FL) and Bubba hates going out in the snow. We just got back last night from a few weeks in FL. Before we left he did the same thing (refusing to eat). Anyway, he started again as soon as we got back to Boston. He only goes outside to pee really quick but is not eating his food. I got him to eat a few bites of my dinner but don't know what to do. I feel so bad for him. A bulldog refusing to eat??? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

That's what I was thinking

My digestion gets messed up when I travel too.

From not eating, he may have some built-up stomach acids.

I would give a Pepcid or Tagamet before feeding his next meal, about 30mins prior the food (no matter if you flavor it or not). Also, if he's not eating for 2 days, he could get constipated...the small amount of waste in his system will possibly dehydrate and that could add another problem...so if he does eat something but squats with no results, he may need a childs suppository to "unplug" at the back end. happy.gif

poor Bubba..

my guess is that he misses grandma. I seem to recall you saying he was really happy when you left him with her for a while. Maybe the visit brought back memories and he is depressed.

Best to ignore the behavior and feed him and say nothing. Adding frosting is okay, but upping the value will only end up with you ordering Prime Rib for him!

Our breeder told me about braunschweger (like liver pate') I mix

a tablespoon of it with hot water in the kibble. It works for giving pills too. We haven't used it in a long time, but when Mozie was not eating, that would make him snarf it right down. I hope Bubba feels better soon. This bitter cold is making regular potty trips outside a real challenge. They want to stand by the door and not get off the walkway, so I have to prod them along until they go. I am ready for the warm, balmy 40's again!

BBQ Sauce

Try a tsp of bbq sauce mixed in to his food. Works everytime.

I added two different kinds of soft food and even...

some Pad Thai last night. He did eat the Pad Thai off top but has not eaten his dry or soft food today. I have not had the chance to go to the grocery store and have nothing to eat in my apartment. I'll go in the morning and buy lots of yummy enticements to mix w/ his food.

I agree that the stress of travel could be affecting him. We obviously had to drive b/c he couldn't fly and we were in hotels for 2 nights. He never refused a yummy treat like a cheeseburger from McD's but did not eat much of his food in the hotel. He ate fine in Florida but we were at my mom's house and he is very comfortable there. I hate to put him through the travel but I was gone for a few weeks and wouldn't consider leaving him here. I know he is really happy to be back home (we've only lived in Boston for 3 months). He was SO excited when we got to our building yesterday and ran super fast up the 10 steps.

Thanks for the advice. I hope he'll come around soon. He's definitely not going to starve. He needs to lose 5-7 lbs so maybe this will jump start his weight loss. Only thing is he doesn't like to walk on the sidewalk. He won't budge in booties. I've been using wax and it seems to finally be working so the salt isn't as bothersome.

Happy Friday everyone.

Maybe he's got the dreaded "Snowflu"....

just joking! He will get over it in a day or so... has to be pretty severe for a Bully to not eat!

He may just be having a 'blue day' just like humans do.

Try some

baby beef or frozen bil jac mixed in with his food. I have yet for any of my dogs to refuse either.

maybe the stress of leaving on vacation and coming back home too

I know that effects the bulldogs big time here..
any change in routine
did he eat on vacation fine???

for sure NO expert ..but maybe he has to come to LOVE the snow..

MY BULLIES did not like the snow before either and believe me they had to get used to it..it really dumps on here..
what I did was get them out to play in the snow..a bit..
got a jolly ball and take them out and play and play in it..

another idea is to try a coat on Bubba..
that might help
or you go out with him..

can you try to add something to his food to entice him
like some moist food of some kind??

Kim...

I know our bulldogs have the IQ of Einstein, but I seriously don't think they can connect not eating with not pooping lol. Maybe he's got a bug or maybe he's tired of his food? Does he eat thing other than his food like treats?
