? about Revolution for Heartworm etc...

Last night Jennipher reccommended Revolution for tick, flea, heartworm, etc. Jennipher, if you are on, or anyone else, if I used this it would take the place of both Heartguard and Frontline? We live in Atlanta and don't get much of a winter. Wanted a few opinions before I ask my vet. Thanks!

Thanks Wendy..That is my problem..

as well. It would be so much easier to apply just one. I had no idea such a product existed. Thanks again for the info.

We have used Revolution since we got Henry...

and now we use it on Prissy too. If you get an animal infested with ticks, for example, you should use something else to get rid of them fast. Then the Revolution will keep everything off of them. That is what we were told- Revolution will prevent everything from ear mites and heartworms to fleas and ticks, but it isnt the gr4eatest at killing an infestation of ticks if you get an animal already infested. (We had this problem)

We use it and we love it. The biggest problem we have had is remembering to apply it once a month. lol I have to write it REALLY big on the calendar!

WoW, Excellent Info..

I think I have met my match. My husband makes fun of me because of the intense research I do on EVERYTHING! Can't help it, started with Grad school and continues into my job (developing courseware)and life.
Once again, thanks for the info and help, I am going to take a closer look and then talk to my vet next week.

very good info

and also remember that heartgaurd has them as does frontline and advantix and K9 advantage and all of the other brands.
its all about what works for your pet and you.
We at the office here in the PNW have found that while we have had 5 cats out of who knows how many treated come back because of mild irritation or hairloss issues we have never had a person return with their dog yet. not to say the product probably doesnt have issues just liek the others do but we have found its very effective and as far as we know we (OUR OFFICE) has seen no issues.

I would recommend taking a look at all products and then talkin to YOUR vet about the pro's and con's of each one and making a des. based on that.

by the way thats a great site.

revolution & adverse reactions

as with any of these chemicals...know your risks when using them. there are over a hundred different adverse reactions reported to the fda on revolution, when applied topically to dogs (as well as cats). remember, the reported reactions are thought to be only about 10-15%...so these numbers can be significantly higher.

there have also been numerous reports of human reactions, so be careful w/ this chemical. even the website recommends if you get any on you, to wash immediately off your skin & to not touch your dog until the chemical is dry.

the revolution website says the following on side effects:
"The most common is hair loss at the site of application with or without inflammation (redness, flaking) in cats. Other side effects reported in cats and dogs include vomiting, diarrhea with or without blood, anorexia (decreased appetite), lethargy (sluggishness), salivation, rapid breathing, pruritus (itching), urticaria (welts, hives), erythema (skin redness), ataxia (incoordination), fever and rare instances of death. There have also been rare reports of seizures in dogs."

note they don't list the "most common" reaction in dogs, only cats. maybe that is because the reports to the fda show that the most common reaction in dogs is ineffectiveness against heartworm larvae! the 2nd most common reaction is it's ineffectiveness against fleas (both with over 1000 reports)! aren't those 2 main reasons you would be using this product?

revolution also contains BHT (a preservative & suspected carcinogen). only you can choose the risks you are willing to take with your dogs...but at least make them informed.

so here are the top 20 reported reactions, i'll list the % of the first 5...the rest are available on the fda website (link below).

if you would like to view this information yourself, or would like to look up reactions to any other chemical product (heartgard, frontline, etc), here is the link:
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/index/ade/ade_cum.htm
the link to click is in the middle of the page (Cumulative Adverse Drug Experience) and is updated every month i think.

i hope that will help you make a more informed decision on which products to use (or not use).

yes this would act as your heartgaurd and.

your frontline.
Its very easy to apply and works VERY well for everything from heartworm to earmites and other nastys lol.
