9 Week old Biting.. Help!

Hi,

We purchased our bullie from a very responsible breeder. The pup is almost 10 weeks old. Here's the problem we've been having, he's been lunging and nipping at my 4 year old, myself and husband. Although his teeth are small, i'm horribly afraid of him taking a nip/bite at my 6 mo. old daughter.. He has lunged at my 4 year olds face, and that also makes me afraid.
We have reprimanded him by tapping his nose with a firm "NO BITE"..i don't know how many times or how long it will take for him to understand this. We have even put our hands/fingers in his mouth and when he tries to bite, we pull back yelling 'ouch!" as if he hurt us.. this hasn't worked either.

Suggestions!? We've never owned a dog before, so this is our first BUlldog and really have little idea what else to do.
Thanks!!!

Re Biting

First of all CONGRATULATIONS on owning oyur own Bulldog. Bitng is normal at that age, his mom would grab him by the loose skin on the top or sides of his neck and REDIRECT!! HIS BEHAVIOR. we can do this and add a loud no, then replace your finger with a nylabone, as others have said it's not to early to start basic behavior training. short sessions and patience. Every now and then they go through a growth spurt mentally and pick things up really quick don't panic also the 2 and 4 year pld should always be supervised when with a puppy of that age.

Work on obedience training with your puppy. Work on getting him to sit and lay. Use alot of positive reinforcement. When he begins to bit and lunge, try to get him to sit with a treat. Also, when he begins to bite and lunge, try not to move around and yell - some puppies see this as a form of play and it increases their activity (biting, etc.) If you can, turn and walk out of the room as quietly as possible. This does not have to be for a long period of time ( a few minutes is fine).

There seem to be some dogs that get worse with any type of negative correction ( shaking cans, spraying water, loud no's, yelping, etc) If you have a dog like this, you need to start working on the positive training and distracting and interrupting the unwanted behavior. At ten weeks, it is hard to know that but it is not to early to work on teaching him to sit, etc.

BITTER APPLE!!!!!

Get this and put it on, hands, feet, ect... thank me later.

Re: Be firm

And be sure to distract him. Make him stop, as above, and immediately give him something else to do, like something to chew on or tug. They outgrow it.

You might also want to get some chewy toys like a nylabone. my puppy will be 10 weeks tomorrow and we are going throught the same thing. They all do this. When Bulldozer tries biting us ( we also have 2 young kids) we "yipe" loudly and he usually gets the hint or we will shake his loose skin around his face gently and say NO firmly. After this is done we give him his bone and then he continues to chew on that and then we praise him up and down. he still needs reminders but he is coming along.

Be firm

Pam,

I answered your other post on your dog pouting when corrected. Again, do a firm correction, grab by the loose skin around the face/neck, give a little shake (like momma dog would), and right in his face say loudly, NO, or BAD. Or an opened palm smack in the face, chin when he bites.

It is normal for puppies to play a little rough. But, they can learn NO, "Easy", "Stop", etc. And grab and correct him. Of course, when he is being good and loving, praise him and love him to let him know that is good behavior.

Do you have a crate for him? In not, definitely get him a crate, and let him have some time in there when you can't be watching him with your young children.

Don't worry, he'll still love you.
