Hi there. My bulldog has never had hotspots and all of a sudden at 8 she starting getting them all over. I've been to the vet many times basically to be told that the only way to treat them is to use the betagen spray (or another drop they have) and if that doesn't help do 2 weeks of prednizone. I also tried this shampoo system to no avail. My bully has always had some allergy issues (ocassionally breaking out in hives which would go away with benedryl). Then we moved from GA to NJ and the hotspots started. She got them all over her body. I keep her indoors in the A/C. We've been in NJ again for 3 months and she's still getting them. Another thing I find strange is that when we went to GA last April, I trimmed the hair from all the spots and it's now Feb and her hair has not filled in in all those places. I did do bloodwork which showed she was healthy. I just am curious if there is a better way to cure these things and stop her from getting them. I don't like doing prednizone all the time. Please help!

could be shampoo or food related..
Junior started getting hot spots, so I stopped using Malaseb shampoo and changed his food from NB fish to NB duck. This all started after feeding that food for several months and using the shampoo for years. The shampoo change and food change along with using Ottomax (ear med)at a topical cleared the spots up. He still gets one occasionally and the Ottomax clears it up within a day or two.

I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.
I would give Keflex (Cephalexin) for 10-14 days if there are several hot spots. Pred would be my very last resort. I've never had to give it to Junior. BTW, Junior is 8.

I think HotSpots MAY be
directly related to stress...some type of stressor, either the moves, being in heat or whatever. She may need a dose of antibiotics...say, Keflex. Prednisone is the last resort.

If you catch them in time, you could wash the spot thoroughly with either Stanhexidine or Chlorhexidine...and dry ...then apply GOLD BOND POWDER... that stuff is amazing!

Hmmm, don't know about the hot spots
But I do know that Stella's hair takes about two years to grow back when I shave it, which is why I never do anymore. I just work around it.
