Hey gang,

I don't get here as much as I would like to, and I STILL don't have a job nor the money to support the life of a bulldog, so I don't have one yet sad.gif I'm also still doing research and learning as I go. My two questions for today are.

While watching Animal Planet Dogs 101 as they were mentioning Health issues, I was aware of most of them, but they had 'numerous heart issues'. What issues are these, and where would be a good site that I can learn about them?

Question 2: I'm seeing bullies in "action" shots lately on the forum. They all seem to be the bully running full tilt big-eyed, ears pinned back having fun. Now a misconception that I had was that bulldogs plodded along enjoying life. I didn't know that they 'ran' so the question is this...when running do they tend to watch out for obstacles in front of them *i.e. their owners* or do they tend to do like Golden Retrievers do and kneecap their owners?

Thanks for the info.

The reason I posed the energy question is because...

We had a golden named Lucy until about 3 years ago Lost her at age 13 who one day when I was coming home from school College and was walking up the driveway Dad let her out and she CHARGED right at me...now I truly believe PART of the pain I suffered was becaue it was January in Wisconsin...well Lucy CHARGED at me...down a sloping driveway...hit a patch of ice and if she had been a car you would've said she "lost it" she couldn't stop, I couldn't get out of the way and let me tell you if dogs can convey thoughts her only thought was 'oh sh*t'. She managed to turn so instead of head first I got rear end and body...right into the FRONT of my kneecap! I went down like I was shot...she gets control of her legs and runs up the driveway barking like crazy probably trying to convey 'Help I killed him'. Dad opened the door and said 'what happened to you?' I simply said "Lucy" as I got to my feet and hobbled into the house. This was with a 45 pound golden retriever that was skinny not a 50 or 60 pound front end loaded bully. Also as I said any time I've seen bullies they are in a showing arena, or on a walk. I never gotten to seem then in their environment. My experience lends more toward goldens, so some of my questions are trying to figure out how different they are. And actually, it seems that they're both about the same attitude wise. Very happy, very pleasing, very CRAZY.

I have a golden retriever that as a pup battering rammed a tv stand, and STILL at age 3 barks at his reflection in the bay window late at night if I leave the light by my chair on so I think I can handle bully craziness, I just need more knowledge.

From a long time Bulldogger...

I have not been aware that Heart issues were a real big problem with Bulldogs. I had one older guy die in his sleep @ the age of 10, but that was years ago. The vet said it was probably a heart attack. He was a very healthy dog right up until that happened.

As for energetic? These guys are BULLDOGS...not Greyhounds. LOL. Best part of going out is coming back in and getting on the sofa @ our place...hahaha! They need to conserve energy for eating and sleeping...LOL!

You will run across the rare bully who is full of piss and vinegar all their life but that is the rarity not the norm, I think.

when Gus knocked me ...he was in full case of the zoomies..lol

he came running around the side of the kitchen and i was just getting up off the chair. he is deaf so he did not hear me say SLOW DOWN..lol and he hit me straight on. wow did I bruise myself.
I could not believe how strong and how much force a bulldog has at full tilt..lol

I survived but I stay out of the way of all zoomies here. I have seen all 5 dogs go into a case of the zoomies at one time...and I just hide somewhere else not close to them..hahahaha

Kirby likes to run full steam and jump

He only has 2 speeds: Off and Full tilt boogie. He's mellowed a little since he was a puppy, but not much. The boy loves action and knows how to bring it. happy.gif

My Son's Bully Tugboat took me out!!

We were outside and I wasn't paying attention, Tugboat came running @ me full bore and totally took me down. I fell on the concrete like a sack 'o taters!! My bulldogs use their mass and low center of gravity to push me around.

OMG, I'm in stitches now! LOL Your two sound like Moze.

He has knocked me down from behind twice. The second time was not good...I injured my kneecap pretty badly. I still have to be careful with it. It wasn't his fault. He is just extremely hyper! Ollie is gentle and would never knock me down. We actually still have to put Moze in his crate when we have company. He acts like a puppy. He is growing up a little, but he will take more patience and a few more years to grow out of it.

I'll admit it - I PERSONALLY have been "kneecapped"...

and it wasn't only Sanford, it was his cohort in crime and buddy Copper (his boxer best friend).

We (my best friend and I) were out walking the dogs and unfortunately to my dismay I wasn't paying attention to notice they (the dogs) had circled back behind us and were now chasing each other at FULL SPEED and then proceeded to flatten me. It was the proverbial feet up in the air and me landing flat on my BUTT on the trail. Lucky for my friend she was off to the side a bit and they didn't get her.

Do you know what, they didn't EVEN stop. Talk about a drive by. They just kept on running like a couple of banshees leaving me laying on the ground.

So to answer your question... some are laze abouts and some are NOT - mine happens to be one that is NOT.

run...lol Bella says what the heck is that...

she litterally flies
she is down about 6 pounds from being outside playing with her jolly ball.
in the beginning she was long behind the pugs...to play outside..NOW she is first all the time.
whoever said that bullies live a quiet life had not met Bella.
Gus is very active and NO he does not always watch where he goes..I had a bruised knee from him hitting me.
bullies are tough and strong..

Audrey runs around like a NUT

playing soccer. She jumps in the air and does backflips too to catch the ball. Sometimes she lands with this huge "OOMPH!" and scares the heck out of us.

well then that's serious business

all that peeing and leg lifting. No wonder it wears him out! Dehydrates him too, he needs a beer to help replenish the stock.

Dave and Zapper's picture

Zapper can sprint about 30' and he's done. When we walk to the e

which is a very, very short distance (3 houses), it takes at least 1/2 hour ! Of course he pees on every mailbox post, tree, bush, flower, sign, etc in sight LOL !

Run? Ike can FLY!

Ike will be a year on the 25th of this month and he is like living with the Tasmanian Devil. He has this terrifying tendency to launch himself off the stairs from 3 steps up... The other day he was running from one room to the next to get a toy and at the threshold btwen the livingroom and the kitchen, I swear, he took flight... And talk about kneecapping... He was recently in a cone for two weeks after eye surgery and I still have the bruises on the backs of my knees to prove it... They are not all the lay-around, lazy lumps people believe them to be.

I don't know about "numerous" heart issues but I lost Chunk back in August to Cardiomyopathy, which had gone undetected until it was too late.

Good luck with your research!

Back of the knee caps. SPLASH!!! SCREAM!!!!

Buddy and Karen's picture

Ozzy's a slug

He'll have really short bursts of energy here and there
where he might sprint 100 ft but that's about it.
He likes to play with his black lab brother but that
doesn't last more than 5 minutes either.

He's a bum, always has been LOL happy.gif

Now the heart problems, I don't know anything about that.
Ozzy's 7 1/2 and hasn't had any. Thank goodness happy.gif

Onslow took out a guy at the dog park

one time he usually tries to be mindful but sometimes, you can't stop in time LOL The guy was ok but a bit stunned. Mine was not the typical "lazy bully" at all - just the opposite.

Not sure about heart conditions but it's always good to make sure the 4 legged parents are health tested. Good luck!

get outta the way or she will knock you on your @$$!! but of course she always comes back to see if i am okay and give me a big sloppy kiss. tee hee. heart issues seem to be addressed here on the board, it is something to be aware of and vet checks always are a must. some others with that experience will chime in i can bet.
