My husband and I are going nuts in this too quiet house since losing Sherman. We've decided to jump right back in and get another puppy. It's been years since we've had to do research on finding a puppy and I don't even know where to start. Any ideas on how or where to start looking?
Also, I've seen mixed comments on here about giving Heart worm and flea preventatives. I'd really prefer to start our dogs, now and future dogs, on something natural with the same results. Is there anything like that available?
Thanks!
Darcy
I agree.. very rewarding to get a rescue.
We got Bentley as a puppy and when he was two we rescued Georgia. She was older 5/6 when we got her. She had never been around kids and I had a 3 year old. I was fearful about what she would be like having been a rescue. It turns out that Bentley is worse than her. He is our controller bullie. She is awesome. Since the begining she loves my daughter even sleeps with her. She is a large girl at 85lbs, but is so gentle. She was house broken, extremely friendly, and so full of love. She is so devoted to us it is not even funny. Bentley would rather play with a toy in another room, not Georgia. She likes to spend all her time with us. And still to this day everytime you leave the house and come back she is there greeting us like we have been gone for days. She hops and twists her butt for atleast 5 minutes. Bentley looks up at us to see if they are getting a treat and goes about his business. I will definatley look into rescue again!
I second that. It's so rewarding to adopt a rescue Bulldog or...
any pure breed mixed-breed dog, quite honestly. These furbabies are so very special. They give us so much in return.
With the economy in a disaster, there are so many more dogs that need a home, desperately. Rescuing also reduces the number of dogs euthanized too, which a real plus.
Rescuing both of my Bulldogs has been wonderful. I am so glad I did it, and they give us back a million times in love, loyalty, and courage, whatever we give them.
forget a puppy. Save a rescue instead..
You won't be sorry. There are some great dogs out there needing homes and most are already housebroken and don't eat furniture!

I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.

The home page for this web site has a list of approved breeders
and you may also want to consider rescue. Be sure, however, to stay away from puppy mills and pet stores (many, if not most, of whom buy their puppies from puppy mills).

You may also want to say what state you are in. Some of the people who are regular posters here, and who live in your state, will likely know of good, reputable breeders for you to contact.
I fully understand how you feel. My first bulldog crossed over very suddenly and unexpectedly when she was 7 3/4 years old. She used to always sleep in my bed, right next to me. In addition to being crushed by her passing, that first night the silence just overwhelmed me. I was so used to her snoring, I didn't realize how soothing it had been until she was gone. Within a month, I bot Boo, and then not long after that, I bot Clovis. Hopefully I will never again be without that wonderfully comforting sound of a bulldog snoring next to me at night.

Another voice for considering Rescue
You may be able to get a dog under 2yrs old, which is still very young and active with lots of love and kisses yet to give in his/her lifetime. Please see what is available in your area before you make your decision.
