on the future purpose of the crate as well. Do you plan on using it in your car for travel? Will you crate the puppy when it grows up? Will you crate the adult for longer time periods during the day? Will you never use it after the puppy is potty trained?
Here are the crates I have
1 Midwest crate (22Lx13Wx16H) - Used for little puppies when traveling.
2 Precision Suit Case Style crates (30Lx19Wx21H - These fit side by side in my car (Subaru Outback) for traveling and dogs shows and they fit on the show crate cart. Kohl does not fit in these. Well he can but it's a squeeze.
2 Midwest 2 door style (30Lx21Wx24H) - I use this size for in the house. If you have a 40-50 lb dog this is a perfect size for in the house and still managable to use for travel.
2 Midwest 2 door style (36Lx24Wx27H) - I use these for Kohl, currently have 1 setup in his kennel and 1 in the house. These are big for travel but great if you have room in your house. And yes a divider works, although I have never used those dividers and throw them out, I've never had a puppy that pooped in its crate. If you keep a tight schedule you can potty train without using a divider. I personally would rather put bed on one side and papers on the other so if the puppy does need to poop it can, but doesn't have to lay in it. IMO when you gotta go you gotta go and sometimes you can't hold it.
2 Soft Crates (different sizes) - My preference is the Petnation Porta Crate. These are great for travel, after the dog is crate trained and potty trained as these can be easily destroyed. They are perfect if you need something for a hotel room or in the car that easily folds up, is light and easy to carry. I don't love them for travel in the car as they can get warm, no airflow like a wire crate and they can't be as safe as a wire crate incase of accident. I have a small one about the size of my Precision crates that I've used alot. Infact Kohl decided to sleep in it last night, they are den like so they like them.
I have 3 crates in my house (1 in my office, 1 in my bedroom and 1 in the dining room) which are just left open and everyone of the dogs, even MacKenzie will go into them to sleep.

for the replies. We have never crated before- but we are adopting a 4 yr old bully who is crated. We are going with a 36 inch (she was kept in a 30). I don't plan on closing the door on her, I just want her to have a safe place to go that she is familiar with since she will be coming to a new house. We have always made our spare bedroom the dogs room for when we are not home. It is completley empty and only has dog stuff in it. Once she gets used to our house we are hoping to let her roam free :)
a 36" crate that has a divider in it
or you will be buying several crates - the divider is essential, as you move it, as the puppy grows :)

Really Depends

I use General Cage series 200 white cages.
I have the 214 model and it is big enough for Slugger to use if needed.
I prefer General white cages because it comes with a metal pan. I hate plastic pans. I once had a male that was
quite bouncy in his crate and he put a hairline crack in it. When he sat down his testicles became pinched in the crack.
Boy did that poor boy scream his head off. Never had plastic since. I have had metal pans custom made to fit crates that
came with plastic. I have always recommended General Cage to everyone who purchased puppies from me.
Thanks...
