What do you feed your Bully?

Just wondering what food you have found to be the best. We've tried several and are now on Acana but Bentley has developed acne/some sort of red bumps around mouth and chin.  His stools are finally firm for the first time in the six months I've had him.  This is the fourth food we've tried.

Difficult question

I know that everyone has their own personal favorite and sometimes a Bully can thrive on regular store bought grain full crap.  I have the same question though, we live in a pretty remote area and delivery is our major problem.  We are trying to switch to something though and everyone claims theirs is the best!  It feels like a crapshoot that you either get lucky and find something that works, or you go through 5 different brands and lots of cleanup!  LOL  Anyway, i am trying to find the difference between Nature's Balance and Blue Buffalo as far as grain free.  Candidae as far as "regular".  California natural and Solid Gold come up alot in conversation too.

Any help is welcomed, I know there is probably alot of us out there wanting to do better, but just unsure.

It is a difficult question,

It is a difficult question, isn't it?  We started off with Blue Buffalo Limited Ingredient b/c our vet suggested a limited ingredient diet.  It didn't seem like he was getting the nutrition he needed because for a bulldog he is pretty active.  He also always had loose stools on it.  Then we switched to Blue Buffalo Wilderness because we were told it was the best of the best.  I think it was too much protein because his stool was very loose and I also found very small bones in it which was strange since it's made from boneless salmon.

We are now on Acana, which is grain free.  He seems to be doing great on it - coat looks great and stool is very firm but now he has some acne/small bumps around chin and lip area.  I have no idea whether or not it's related.

The red bumps could just be achne

Like you said.  You can try to curb that by feeding him in a stainless steel dish.

My girl eats a specialty food for her kindneys so I'm no help.  But if his stool is good on this and the only problem is with the puppy acne, I would tend to stick with what you are using now.

Taste of the Wild

Like you said each dog is different and what works for mine may not work for yours but this works for Onslow.  It's kinda expensive :(  He's on the bison and venicin flavor.

ANGER LOL

I am researching beyond what i shoudl be doing at work, and have come to this conclusion.  WHY do ALL weight management dog foods have a BULLY ON THEIR BAG!!!!

lol..............not true.............

Your post made me laugh cause I noticed that too.....however!  I am going to try this food on my bully.  He is allergic to poultry and does well on fish based kibble, however, TOTW has packed on the lbs!!!

Maybe because it does not read "lite" but "mature" cause it is a senior dog food?????

what our very bully-experienced vet says about the red bumps....

Meaty also has them, and sometimes they bleed just a little.  Vet says it's acne and LOTS of bullies have

it (he REALLY knows bullies, too!)...... he said the "Preventic" tick collar is

supposed to help....well, I hate to say this, but it doesn't!  And I don't like that this collar is ONLy available at the vet and is also expensive.  (on a positive note, though.....it DOES kill ticks  IMMEDIATELY!)

One other thought, and you may already be doing this----metal food and water bowls?  I've read in many

sources that non-metal can cause acne and other skin issues.

No easy answers on the chin acne.....plus, I had another vet say it was ingrown hairs....either way,

NOTHING has helped, and I hate it when they bleed a little.   We deal with the chin issues and

also his very painful interdigital cysts...tried LOTS of things, but so far nothing has worked. Sorry

I have been so lengthy in my reply but not HELPED you at all......!

Tim and Forever Doyle's picture

I have fed many..

...different foods to Doyle. He's almost 8 now. We did the raw thing for several years and I was really liking it, although I was buying Natures Variety patties or equivalent, not making it at home. He was doing great on it but then one day around 4-5 years old he turned his nose up at it and wouldn't eat it! That stuff is too expensive to waste, and having to thaw and trying to save,  he won and we switched to kibble.

We did Orijen and his coat was great and he was healthy and liked the food, but his stools were runny. I think the protein content is a bit high for him.

I tried a couple other grain free options right after that and then settled with Taste of the Wild Pacific. He liked it, stools were good, he looked and felt good, sweet deal.

Then I saw that Costco has Natures Domain, a store brand that appears to have pretty much the exact same formula as TOTW, for half the price. So I switched to that and have been feeding for what seems a year and a half or so. They also came out with a turkey formula of Natures Domain that's slightly less expensive than the salmon. He's been going great on it and I'm toggling back and for between the two flavors with no ill effects.

Hope this helps, but really it seems trial and error for most -- as what one bully thrives on, another may struggle.

My vet told me to stay away

My vet told me to stay away from foods like Acana, Orijen, she says it's way to high in protein and could cause kidney problems down the road. I am a big fan of Natural Balance. But whatever works for your babies
