What size is that? I was considering getting one for Fatboy
but didn't know how big to get one. Also, do they actually eat the whole thing? Seems weird and I'm probably being a neurotic doggy mom but I'm afraid Fatboy will poke his eye out =P
Fatboy aka Stinky :)
I knocked it down a bit :)
I took the whole antler, and I cut it into pieces, so no long thin pointy parts. I used the Dremil to knock them off :) I cut them into 7-8 Inches. I got 2 really nice chew toys out of the 1st one, and a few smaller longer pieces that would be good for a neighbors yorkie.
Gizmo likes to try to stick things in her mouth to get to her back teeth and ends up gagging on them.
If you do get any, do not get the ones split down the middle (they take 1 really large antler and try to make 2 pieces out of it) they get into the 'marrow' (center) of the antler, and they go through it rather quickly then.
Gizmo LOVES her antlers :)

Gizmo got mail
That looks like you will still be chewing on that for a year. Its almost as big as you. Enjoy it

Tell me about these antlers
The dude at the pet store was trying to convince me to get one for Dreadnought, but I wasn't sure if it would be a good thing for him to chew. Does it come apart or slowly dissolve? Is there any chance that small pieces could come off? Dread loves chew toys and is a super strong chewer.
How much did you pay for that big one, if you don't mind me asking? The ones at the pet store were really spendy.

My antler experiences....
I looked at them for a while at the local pet store, and was like.. "humm wow, would they work? but they seem expensive"
For Comparison, a Large Nylabone is $15-20 depending on the style -
A large 'piece' of ELK Antler was $25 -
Now things to look for - I would not buy an antler piece that is sawed down the middle (Elk Antlers are thick, so they split them) however, it exposes what I call the 'marrow center' of the antler, and it is softer and tends to get a bit messy.
If you want a long lasting, natural chew toy, they are the way to go in my opinion, Gizmo seems to really enjoy them, and there are different 'Flavors' as each type of animal is different (Mule Deer, Elk, Whitetail Deer, and I've seen Moose 'slices' too!)
The complete antlers I got were from a friend (who really SHOULD, go into a side business if she can get a supply of them) - A hacksaw or a dremil and they are cut into managable pieces.
Oh another thing, look for antlers that are 'Sheds' as in they are naturally shed in the spring/summer, so they are a re-newable resource, I dont know the durablity of an antler that wasnt a shed, I would think it would be softer.
Google 'Antler Chews' or 'Antler Dog Chews' compare online (with shipping) to your local pet store - Also try to match up the antler piece size to your dog (thin tips for small dogs, large base for bigger dogs)
Gizmo with her Antler is like Viper and his Jolly Ball :)
I'll gladly answer anymore questions (the best I can) all of my knowledge is from the different websites :)

Thanks for the info
I think we will try one. I just didn't want to give my boy anything that he might choke on, but it sounds like these are pretty durable.

Antler Warning
While Dudley and Mabel love these, Mabel managed to break the tip off a tooth while chewing on one. I've heard of others having the same experience with breaking/chipping teeth.
