wanted to share....

So probably 7 or 8 weeks ago I posted about Vern getting his first and pretty ugly hot spot on his shoulder area.  I wasn't sure what had caused it but I had just started giving him a glucosamine & chondroitin supplement 9 days earlier.  I stopped giving him the supplement immediately and treated the hot spot and all is better now - nothing has came back since.

When all of this happened I looked over the supplement bottle (Nutramax Cosequin DS Double-Strength Chewable Tablets) I couldn't find a list of ingredients.  I went to their website and a list of ingredients was not available there either.  So, I decided to email the company and inform them of Vern's experience (I was clear that I wasn't 100% certain that the supplement caused the hotspot) and asked for a list of ingredients so that if Vern is indeed allergic to something that it would help me figure out what it was, in the event of future allergic reaction.

It took several weeks but I finally received an email a week or two ago and they said they couldn't discuss this via email and to call them and they gave me a case number.  I forgot about it and didn't call.  Then yesterday they sent me another email asking me to call.  Fine, I decided to call as the information would be really nice.

After identifying my case number, I was directed to their vet on staff, John.  I was really impressed.  He asked me a lot of questions, whether I had sought medical assistance (hadn't because I had read enough on this board to know what to do) and confidentially documented all the information relating to Vern and this supplement.  Then he gave me the ingredient list and specifically discussed two of the ingredients that were most likely to cause an allergic reaction - he said most often they are proteins.  This supplement contained ingredients derived from shellfish and from bovine cartilage.

We were on the phone for 19 minutes and he said that glucosamine and chondroitin are great supplements to give dogs and he recommended that I find those supplements that are derived from plant based materials.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my story and wondered if any of you have had any allergic reaction to a supplement or have  a recommendation for glucosamine & chondroitin supplement.

Thanks!

Teresa

Maybull's supplments

We have Maybull on a prescription joint supplment with 900 mg of Glucosamine and a couple of other things. She was given a larger dose to build up a level (2 tabs per day) for a month, and then put on a one tab per day maintainance level. The main ingredient is liver flavor, but the rest seems to be plant based, mostly avacado and soy. They seem to have helped, but they are expensive – about a dollar a pill. Maybull likes hers with a little cream cheese.

The brand is Dasuquin from Nubramaz Labs. You might want to ask your vet about these if the brand you used is giving your dog allergy problems.
