Raleigh the Bulldog avatar image

Two quick questions for all of you...

1. Lately, my Bulldog, Raleigh, has slept on her bed in her crate on her back.  Since she's been doing this it's been taking longer for her to fall asleep and she makes these high-pitched yelping/barking sounds as she's trying to fall asleep.  I try laying down next to her and taking her outside and back in the crate, but she just does it again afterwards?  Is this normal?

2. We were finished with a walk yesterday and I was hanging up her leash and when I turned around, I noticed she walked up a few of the stairs (she's never paid attention to them before and is only 4 months old.) I didn't want her to hurt herself, so I called her to come back down.  Instead of walking back down, however, she jumped towards me and landed on her face.  She grimaced a bit for about ten seconds, but then she was fine.  I checked and she didn't lose any teeth and doesn't seem to be in any pain.  The vet said that she looked fine and that she's a really tough girl.  I don't let her out of my sight near the stairs anymore, but should I buy a gate blocking them for the future... and can she ever learn to walk up the stairs.

...Thanks in advance. :)

Dont know about number one

Dont know about number one but knowing all the weird things bullies like to do I would think this is "normal".

Bulldogs can definitely do stairs.  We live in an aparment building so Oliver had to learn stairs pretty early.  He starter going up them on his own probably when he was about 3 months old.  Started going down probably a month later.  I would try carrying him down whenever possible though because I was worried about the impact on his legs.

When Chef D was younger

(a whole 1 week shy of 6 months right now) he slept on his back. I don't remember the sounds he made, but he didn't seem to mind being like that.  I'm not sure it's normal, but I don't think it's abnormal either.

2 - Chef started on going up stairs around 3 months.  He loved going up, didn't know what the hell to do to come down.  We have a friend who has a 4 year old golden-poodle mix and after a few weeks she taught him how to go down.  Until then he never tried to jump, instead he put on his bulldog brakes and just stopped.

First, let me just say --

First, let me just say -- Raleigh is adorable!

Beatrix doesn't sleep on her back, but she does like to lie on her back sometimes, especially when she's super relaxed.

As for stairs, bulldogs can totally do them! When Beatrix was very little, I taught her on some stairs near where I work that are both shallow and very broad, so it was easy for her to learn to navigate them. Once she figured it out, there was no stopping her -- now she bounds up and down stairs without even thinking about it.

I totally get that fear, though, from her jump! When Beatrix was small, she was on the sofa with me, and decided to jump off with no warning at all. And, like Raleigh, clocked her chin on the floor when she landed. Mike and I freaked out, and kept checking her to make sure she wasn't hurt, but she was just fine. (Although we definitely kept a closer eye on her after that!

aww......sweeeet, ador-a-BULL baby!! Sooo glad she's okay!

sorry, the first question, I have no idea about.....

Since she seems fearless to leap down those stairs, a baby gate sounds like a good idea....so glad she's okay!

Our babies (esp. Meaty!!!) have huge difficulties with stairs....and, you may have already thought of  this, but I'd be

concerned that she will jump onto furniture and leap off and hurt herself.....We've had this happen with MEaty when

he's too excited (say, at the park!)---he'll get away from hubby and LEAP from the car, and it's too high!!! Thank

goodness he hasn't been injured!  Now we have to really be careful when we open the back so he can't try to

be SuperMeaty and try to fly!....

Wow, your baby is soooooo ador-a-bULL!!!!!!!!  :-)

When Molly was younger, she

When Molly was younger, she often slept on her back.  She would sometimes roll around in her crate and bark/yelp too.  I think it is like the zooms (crazy suddent burst of energy where they run around like their butt is on fire-at least Molly does!) but only it happens in the crate instead of running around the house.  Sometimes she would do this for a few minutes before going to bed for the night and then she would pass out and be snoring! I compared it to the over tired toddler who fights sleep! I wouldn't worry.  I think it is just one of the weird/cute things they do!
