Tug of War - yes or no?

Would love some advice as we were told not to play tug of war with Rugby has it could potentially hurt him. Do you all play tug of war with your bully's? If so how and with what? Would love some perspective on this as I am still in that paranoid stage of making sure I do every little thing right!

Thanks!

I play a little tug of war with Gizmo --

but I watch out for her becoming aggressive - the minute she starts the aggressivness - I say *NO* and nope the game and and let her think about it. The tug of war, acutally sometimes happends when she wants something tossed sometimes even her rope!)

We do with our guys

Ozzy and Jax love to play fetch/tug.  You throw something and they will bring to you for a game of tug.  They will also play tug with each other.  If you listen to them you can tell the difference between play growling and getting aggressive.  When we hear the switch we stop.

i played tug of war w/my archie...you''ll know when it's time to let go,*lol*

but make sure you always win-that's what his trainer had told me to do

I played with Stella too

The only reason I heard not to was that they are so strong that they can feel they are the boss of you.  Like Rick said, if puppy becomes in any way pushy or aggressive, just drop the rope and walk away.  He'll figure out soon enough that if it's not fun, his human won't play.

Leader of the pack

The leader of the pack must always win, that's why our vet suggested not playing tug....especially with my boy Boston.  The leader of the pack must always win, so if the phone rings and you drop the toy, the dog has won.......that's his theory anyway.

Kippah plays tug with the other dogs all the time, it is the one thing that really gets them all worked up...to the point of having to break them apart and seperate them till they calm down

We play

Me or my husband will play TOW with dDozer every once in a while... He's got a long snake that we got him that he just loves and we play with that.. Nothing rough, just a little pull back and forth, not enough to get him all riled ( sp?) up, cause usually that turns into him going for his jolly Balkans that's all he wants to play with. .. Have fun ;)

I was informed that tug of war could potentially cause paralysis, hence my aversion to it. I think if we find the right balance of stopping when it gets to aggressive/exciteable than we should be fine. Once again, I appreciate all the advice!
