Is this SFA?

I have posted here in the past about this, and i have gone to the Vet for thyroid test which came back negative. i have tried different foods for 1 month periods, blue buffalo, ukanuba, royal canine, purina, nutro, alpo, raw diet, pizza diet, fish oils, melatonin. etc etc.. each year it gets worse and it doesnt ever grow back completely. i have put grow lights in his kennel for the winter months, well lights that have the same light spectrum as the sun.  he doesnt itch, my god he isnt stressed... what else could it be i am going batty and the vet keeps guessing, every time they guess it cost me $300.00 - $500.00 for nothing.

Sure looks like it to me...

Sanford's has just started showing up.  His lasts about 2 months then goes away for the remainder of the year.  I don't bother doing anything to treat it because it doesn't bother him at all and I prefer not to give him medications unless they are absolutely vital to his health and well being.

It's not the most beautiful of things to look at and I was really bothered by it the first time it showed up (which was 2 years ago) but he's 7 years old now and I'm thankful that's the worst (other than his cruciate ligament rupture) that we've had to deal with.

I think some people treat it with something but my personal preference is to let it be.  Good luck.

I forgot to mention that in some dogs it doesn't go away...

I know there are some on here who have had dogs with SFA that never grows back.  That hasn't been the case for us but I do know that it is for others so it may just be something that is permanent for your bully too.

It is Flank Alopecia - no known 'cure'

Some dogs, (Boxers and Bullies particularly) have this condition, its Flank Alopecia - the puppy isnt uncomfortable due to it, but it bothers us humans instead.

You can try -

the Lights - they may or may not work in your case

a suppliment - they may or may not work in your case

melatonin - it may or may not work in your case.

yes it looks bad, but they don't seem bothered by it. Our Vet said if we would feel better about it, he would take a skin biopsy and send it off, however, he was VERY Sure, that it would be inconclusive - as in a waste of money, and unnecessary trama to our girl.

We have been told to try a product called 'Missing Link' we are 2 weeks into the suppliment - and we havent noticed a change (we bought the bag so we are going to finish it!)

here are both of Gizmo's flanks.

I hope this puts your mind at ease some, when we take Gizmo out to an event, we put a shirt on her, again, she isnt embarrassed about it, as much as we are :)

as long as they arent itching, blistered, etc they are probably fine :) :) :)    Dottie and I have noticed it more on Fawn colored Bullies, but I'm sure its not limited to just them.

I forgot, Thyroid was tested - Normal (lower end of scale)

I forgot to mention we had her Thyroid tested too it was on the lower end of normal (I.E. if normal is  1 to 7  she came back at 1.5 or 2) (I'm not sure what the exact numbers are for 'normal' the 1 to 7 is purely for an example sake)

Flank Alopicia more than likely....

Farley has very similar coloring to your boy, right down to the one white side of the face, his flank looks JUST like that.  Melatonin does not help, lights do not help, supplements did not help.  He does not itch etc. just like your kid.  Just looks yucky.  Thyroid on him came back well within normal range so that was out too.

We live in Washington State...we are moving back to Texas next month so hopefully the brighter days will help him..but if not, it bothers me more than him!

Hazel was getting spots like

Hazel was getting spots like this so after reading here and on a facebook heath forum I started her on 3mg of Meletonin, after about 2 weeks the spots started to fill in again.  I stopped the meletonin after the regrowth and it is still filling in, no more new spots.

That looks like SFA to me.

All the food changes...you need to stick with one for 4-6 months to really see any change. I would suggest a grain free, and more outdoor sunlight on cooler days or early mornings.

Yep

your vet is wasting your money.   Someone on facebook had great luck with a product.  I wish I could remember who it was.  I think I sent Rick the info.  I'll have to look.

I have used a product called Calm Coat very successfully.

I know someone else on the board has used it specifically on SFA with GREAT results. They sell it in most feed stores or horse supply places.

Good luck!

We used Calm Coat for Gus.

He had a mild outbreak of SFA two years ago and the Calm Coat helped him.  We bought it online.

Good luck!
