I've just read some posts and general thought here is royal canin not very good. You would think at 60 dollars a bag ?... It's made their skin and fur very nice though....I switched from nutro grain free... It does better than that. So net question is what's evyone eating? If imgonna switch I want a more informed decision this time. So name brand Variety cost and how many cups per day. As we are a little chunky in this house. Lol thanks so much.... I thought you couldn't go wrong at 60 dollars but apparently it's not quality... And I dont mind spending the money....if its good stuff.
In my opinion
Like I said below, if you're dog's doing well on something, don't change it.
I personally don't buy into the whole "grain free" thing as a be all and end all. I grew up in the country, and our dogs (who we fed Dog Chow and scraps and who lived to be 11 and 12 years old) would go out in the fields and pick corn cobs to eat. That, to me, suggests they wanted/needed something "grainy".
I know most people don't feel this way, but hey. So I wouldn't change your food if your baby is doing well.
Royal Canine
Maybull has done well on her Nutro for 12 years, but she eats 'scraps' too – only the best, of course. We do used Royal C as treats because they're a good size and she loves them. I suspect if they became her regular food, her Nutro would be a treat.
well said celine...i've known
well said celine...i've known ppl who completely did the opposite
of what /how a dog is suppose to be fed...and they lived to a ripe old age...
My advice....if it ain't broke....
If your dog/s doing well on what you feed, don't mess with it! I don't do grain free, I feed Purina One very successfully.

...and we all know what works
...and we all know what works for some mught not work for others...
Grain free is good for dogs that are prone to allergies...
the less ingredients a food has the less likely that a food allergy will occur. I have found that corn, wheat, rice and barley have affected some of my guys, Oscar in particular would have a lot of stomach issues with any grains and Newman will itch himself bloody. So we do the grain free and I prefer the Salmon because it is a good protein level and lower calorie. We have used California Natural, Taste of the Wild and Natural Balance. I like the Ca Natural but it is a little pricey for 3 dogs.
Also...
We tried putting Chester on one of the low calorie brands, I believe it was Royal Canin, about a year ago to help his waistline. Within two weeks he had a horribly gunky tail, gunky ears, itching and tear stains. Newman came to us on Eukanuba and had horrible red/brown tear stains. Switched him to Taste of the Wild grain free and with 3 weeks, tearstains were gone and haven't come back. We also put him on filtered water, which helps. Just my experience.
Agree ... If she is doing fine
on what you are feeding don't change. Just reduce the amount, add green beans as a filler and a little bit of exercise.
No problems with Royal Canine....
Zimmer has been eating it for years and he does just fine. Every dog is different, some do well on a food and others don't. If what you are feeding is working, no need to change it!

Maude was great with Royal Canin, but Gus was not.
So we switched both of them to Blue Buffalo. Maude has no issues with that either but once again, not the best for Gus. So Gus is on Costco's grain-free food, Nature's Domain, and he is doing much better. I really believe there are no right or wrong foods, just what works for your individual bullie.

I've never had my dogs on RC. Currently they are on Fromm grain free salmon tunaline and beef frittata flavors. No problem switching it up between sources of protein, they get one kind in the morning and one kind in the evening. It costs about $65 for a 26 pound bag and my boys get 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening. Their fur looks great and Oliver's tear stains are clearing up (allergy related). For my three, three bags lasts me about a month and a half and I get it delivered to my door from Petflow.com
But like everyone else said, if your group is doing well on the RC, then by all means don't change a thing

I have been feeding Brewer
I have been feeding Brewer Royal Canin since we brought him home. He does super well on it and has had no problems what so ever. I know everyone feeds differently but my suggestion is that if it works then don't try to fix it. Every bully reacts differently. You may end up switching and that new food may not agree with your bully. Just my thought.
grain free IS better
Dogs are carnivores and it takes a LOT out of their organs to digest grains. It may not be something that causes damage right away, but long term the potential is there. If you have a choice, why take that chance? It's like feeding your child spaghettios every day. Your kid is going to look just as healthy as every other kid in his class, but long term it will take it's toll of his overall health.
Some dogs won't have organ damage, just like some people can smoke a pack a day and not get cancer or emphysema, but no one would recommend smoking just beacuse the absolute WORST may not happen. It will still compromise your overall health and well being.
Some dogs will get kidney or liver problems as they get older. Dogs bodies are designed and built to digest animal protein and to get their energy from animal fat, NOT plants. Dogs have NO dietary need for carbohydrates whatsoever.

Our experience
Here's what we've been through with Tucker food wise. Like everyone is saying what works for their dog isn't going to necesarily work for yours.
Our breeder sent us home with the suggestion to have Tucker on science diet because thats what their vet recommended. It was a puppy food so we didn't keep him on it for that reason. Tucker then was on the Royal Canin and did fine, no issues but I switched him to Blue Buffalo because I wanted something with less filler and something more "natural". The protein level was too high and the lamb didn't agree with him with resulted in crazy stinky gas so bye bye BB!
He currently is on "Now" which has a lower protein level and in my opinion lots of good stuff in it. It is grain free but that's not necessarily why I picked it. I do think the grain free food these days is just a bit of a fad. "Now" is made by a Canadian company out of Vancouver and I like to support home grown companies. I have a great pet store here where the owner is super knowledgeable and he helped us pick the food.
Anyway, Tucker is just over 2yrs old and he weighs about 67 pounds. He gets about 2 1/2 cups a day(split into 2) and for a 25lb bag we pay about $80.00. So it's not cheap but Tucker is pretty healthy and he's a good weight. Even though he's on a grain free food his total diet isn't grain free. Yes, he gets dog treats that are not grain free but he also loves his veggies. He'd do anything for a yummy crunchy carrot!
So that's our experience. Good luck figuring things out. IMO, do what you think is best for your dogs. If they're happy and healthy then that's what's most important!
