After seeing seeing a vet bill posted on the bulldog lovers porch site, im thinking about getting some pet insurance and through searching posts it seems like most people are pretty happy with Trupanion. My question is how did you decide what premium/deductable did you go with. Also, am I right in understanding that the insurance doesn't cover anything until the deductable is reached for each incident? So if you have a $500 deductable and your dog goes in 4 times that year, each visit costing $500 insurance won't pay anything? We are more concerned about the more catastrophic events which would end up with a huge bill but help with these smaller bills would be nice too. Thanks
Trupanion
We went with $50 deduction and then 90%--
Deductable--so far it looks like once a year--Jax got burned in March and now is having knee issues--when I sent in the bill for the knee xray--there was no deductible (it was paid for the burn)
They do not cover any of the doctors visit for anything.
We choose them because they do not consider each plan year as a new policy (so anything treated this year will NOT be considered pre exisiting for next year) also they do not have a pre incident max. (we had other insurance on Ozzy and when he had his major eye surgery they only paid the first $1500).
They will be covering Jax's knee surgery

I just bought Trupanion for
I just bought Trupanion for Vern too - some of these stories scare the heck out of me! I haven't used Trupanion yet, but my understanding (from reading on their website) they cover accidents and illnesses and do not cover the inital examination and do not cover well-visits (immunizations and such). When you purchase the plan you select the deductible you want to pay which directly affects the monthly premium.
Here's what I found on their site:
Should I bother to file a claim if my bill is less than my deductible?Yes! Because our deductible is per-incident, you always want to file claims, even if they are below the amount of your deductible. This will reduce the amount of deductible for which you will be responsible for on the next veterinary bill related to that particular condition. Once your deductible has been met for a particular condition, it is met for the life of your pet's policy for the same condition. It is important to point out that Trupanion does not penalize due to any claim submission.
Trupanion experience negative
I had Trupanion when my baby Jackson came down with discospondolytis. They are HUGE on pre-existing issues. Last Thanksgiving, someone stepped on his foot and the next morning he was hurting, yelping etc. We took him to the ER vet who did x-rays and said it was just soft tissue damage to the right hind leg. 1.5 months later he came down with discospondolytis, which is a spinal infection caused by anything. E-Coli, strep etc. It just decides to attack the spine instead of another part of the body. Jackson's infection turned out to be strep. He was 4.5 months old at the time. He would cry and got to the point where he couldn't use his hind legs in a matter of days.
We took him to our vet who did x-rays and sent them to the ER vet, because that is where the neruologist works. In the end, Trupanion denied my claim saying it was pre-existing. How a 4.5 month old puppy could have an infection cursing through his body for 1.5 months with no signs, is beyond me. Especially when within 3 or 4 days he couldn't use his hind legs due to the pain and inflamation of the soft tissue around the vertabrea.
After all this, I read a lot of the comments about Trupanion and tons of people were denied due to pre-existing conditions when most had nothing to do with the new issue. My bill ended up being around $3600.00 in the end. 2 days at the ER with a 48 hour drip, an MRI, monthly x-rays and antibiotics for 6 months. The antibiotics fuse the vertabrea together if it works, if it doesn't you have to have surgery to fuse them. Luckily, I beleive because Jackson was so young, the antibiotics worked wonders.
So, all I'm saying is if you have ever taken your dog into the vet for anything, be weary, they might deny your claim.
Did you
See if you could challenge it. On another insurance Ozzy eye claim was denied because when he was a puppy the first vet we took him too was pure breed adverse and listed everything that could possibly go wrong so the insurance said pre-exsisiting. His new vet spoke to the insurance company and it was eventually covered. It took some time and work but it all worked out.
Remember the person looking at the bill is not a vet--I highly suggest that you call and see if between the vet and the claim dept you can get it covered.
