I'm late asking this question, but after being at PetSmart the other day and seeing all these hilariously HUGE bones that
I know my babies would love, (and NOT buying them 'cuz they're rawhide!!!), it made me wonder---I know bullies
cannot have it, but now I wanna know WHY.....
Once in a while, they get a type of bone that I was told IS safe for them......why one type of bone and not
the other? What kind (if any) bones do you let your babies chew on?

Hi there, thats a good question
and this article explains it all.
http://www.discussdogs.com/forum/f43/rawhide-bad-dogs-310/
I do give Onslow bully sticks (bull penis) but you have to be careful of where they come from too. I get mine from someone who is supplied locally. Don't ever buy the "made in China". And they are still a choking hazard if your dog scoffs things down.
I also at times will give him a marrow bone from the local butcher. He doesn't really eat the bone just the marrow inside which is VERY RICH. Can give them diarreah.
Even the antlers can have bacteria and spores in them, I don't give those to Onslow because I read of another bully chipping his tooth on one. No matter what you always have to be careful.
Hope that helped!
wow....thank you for that link!! And, wow on the antlers!
That is scary how horrible rawhides can be, and they are sold EVERYWHERE and in sooo many forms!!!
(P.S.....it might seem dumb that I didn't do some research before I posted this question (I usually do!)...but I thought
there was a specific reason our bullies couldn't have them, and figured I wouldn't find that specific of a reason
...didn't know they're dangerous for ALL breeds!!!) Scary!!
thanks for sharing!

Bones & teeth......
A friend of mine just had a very freak accident with her bulldog, he was chewing on a bone and the other bulldog someone was under his head, she lifted her head up & the bone somehow slipped and the K-9 was now sideways in her dog's mouth.......blood everywhere. $1,000 and surgery to remove the tooth later. The dentist at the hospital said even nylabones can be dangerous & cause a tooth to break.

Chew "bone" options...
I give Winston bully sticks (aka a bull's STICK...if you know what I mean) and he goes absolutely freaking NUTS over them. I'll post a video of one of his bully-stick freak outs tomorrow if I can figure out it. :) The whole idea of them is pretty gross, but he loves them...they last quite a while...and they don't break apart in pieces that could cause choking problems (like rawhides).
I also give him Nylabones, he'll "sharpen his teeth" on them, but doesn't go quite so crazy for them. I've been mulling over the idea of getting him an antler, but have yet to go down that road so I don't have a lot of advice/experience in that department.
Shannon and Winston :)
My swimming bully buddy!
Gizmo loves her antlers - but anything could be bad :/
I think that anything bone/antler/nyabone wise could break a tooth, heck us humans have it happen all the time and we dont even chew bones :)
.
I know rawhides are WAY bad though
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
Rawhides
and Bully Sticks - Get very slimpy and the dogs tnd to swallow them. The rawhide is difficult to digest if they can digest it at all. Best to stay away from them. They can do the same with Bully Sticks...they get them slimmy and soft then try swallowing the thing whole. I have used Bully Stick on occasion and watch closely and cut off the soggy end. I stopped giving them when I found worms in them, so no more Bully Sticks.
The Himalayan Yak Chews were a great hit with my dogs...a little stinky (not as bad as Bully Sticks) and messing, but fully digestable.
I just picked up a couple of Antlers at the dog show this weekend and they were a huge hit.
I also buy Primo Beef Marrow Bones or Bison Bones from Natures Variety. Dogs do need bones to chew on to keep there teeth and gums healthy. Broken teeth can happen unfortunately, but if you start them with chews they are less likely then to have to be put under for regular teeth cleanings, which is also somewhat of a concern. If there teeth and gums start rotting that effects the internal organs.
So you have to find what works for you.
I use Nylabones too, and they can chew off pieces of those. So whatever you give as a chew, just besure to monitor the chewing and watch for pieces.
I admit I give Lola knotted rawhide bones
But its only when I am home and I am very anal about checking the bone and trimming any loose pieces off.. MOst of the time she doesnt even chew it she just carries it around.. I have come to learn that there is pretty much only a few things a bulldog cant tear up.. all toys and bones should be monitored but extra caution with rawhides.. I also do not buy the cheap ones.. I have come to notice that some are really soft and break apart.. I get some at webbers and they are very hard and it takes lola about a week to sofen then up and once that happens they are thrown out..
