Puppy Mills

Since there is always so many people looking to buy a puppy, I thought I would post a link to a list of USDA breeders.

If you scroll down to the middle of the page, there will be a link.

Thanks Jacinda for posting this.

Unfortunately so many people do not spend the time searching for a good breeder and just go online and buy from a puppy mill.   It will be the death of our beloved breed.

Then you have someone who makes an absurd statement that MANY breeders in Washington State are puppy mills,  That really PISSES me off.  There are more breeders in Washington State breeding lovely bulldogs and yes there are reputable breeders in Eastern Washington as well.  I know of 3 breeders in E WA that I would not hesitate in contacting for puppies.  My Norbert was from Eastern Washington and while he was not show quality he was a lovely, healthy dog, with no allergies.

I just wish people would do some shopping, reading and educate themselves before buying.

Oh I know

I can name several good breeders from WA off the top of my head. This is also a cautionary tale for not only buyers of bulldogs but also breeders as well. I know of a breeder who has been around bulldogs for awhile and shows on a regular basis. Well, they sold a champion male to some people who represented themselves as something other than a puppy mill. Anyway, a little time passed and these puppy millers either decided to shut down or downsize and auctioned off a lot of dogs including the champion male. The original owner was unable to buy the dog back but they are in contact with the new owners.

So, it goes both ways.

thanks for sharing your feelings on this

That was my comment and it is certainly good to know exactly how you feel about it.

I will be careful not to make any comments on serious topics from now on.

*sigh*

We are very passionate people about our chosen breed and try to help educate when possible. So, when you made the statement about WA breeders some people who are trying to improve the breed naturally took offense. Deb, who I have known from this site for many years, is from WA and has owned and loved bulldogs for many years. She has also bred a litter of nice, healthy pups.

We were all new to bulldogs at some point and I especially have learned a ton of stuff about bulldogs from this site. I still learn new things all the time and I don't profess to know everything. But, I do have about 9 years of experience with breeders, buying puppies and health issues associated with bulldogs.  I try to stop by and help when I can but unfortunately, I think some people don't want advice so much as they want you to validate choices they have made.

But, it's all good and it's really all about the BULLDOG.

Questions for you Jacinda

Please don't feel obligated to disclose this info if you don't want...but where are you located?  I know I have several very good and respected breeders "close" to me (within a few hours drive), but I look to all of you on this board for guidance and insight for all things bulldog.  And I know a lot of people who are considering a bully puppy just don't even know where to start when it comes to breeders.

I know on the public forums you can't recommend breeders, but if someone were to contact you (or Deb, or some of the others who breed and show and participate on this website) through a private message would you feel comfortable making recommendations of breeders?  I am not looking for a puppy, but this is just more for those who ARE looking and don't know anyone on the "inside" of the bulldog community.

I agree with your recommendation that they contact their local division or club as a starting point, but the club close to me is, for a lack of a better word, "exclusive" and not the most welcoming group...so that might discourage or intimidate some people who really want to find a healthy puppy and give it a great home.

Personally, I recommend rescue to EVERYONE who wants a bully.  I know a lot of people have a misconception that rescues are "broken" or have something "wrong" with them, or all very old, or very sick...but Winston is proof that great dogs do end up in rescue.  And, I remind people, that even puppies end up in rescue...but that's an entirely separate conversation.

I'm in Arkansas

And believe me, I know how frustrating it can be to find a good breeder. I have struggled in the past.

I've been fortunate to meet many breeders through this site and from observing and speaking to breeders at shows. I am by no means an expert but I have formed opinions good/bad about several breeders. I've also learned to spot red flags from some less than respectable breeders.

I would be glad to offer any help to someone looking for a bulldog. I also agree about rescue and I have adopted two bulldogs. I have some good friends across the country who volunteer for rescues and I can put people in touch with them as well.

Yes ... It can go both ways

That is why I will only sell puppies on limited registration unless I "know" the person well and know their intentions.
