Phoebe meets the neighbourhood kids....

Yesterday we went outside as the kids in our neighbourhood walked home from school. They were huge fans of Chloe and were eager to meet her as they had heard she was now home. Needless to say it was love at first sight on both parts. Have a question while here as well. took her out of the flower bed and mulch this morning and when I did so she growled at me. Later also growled at my husband as he took her away from something. Looking for suggestions as to what to do at those times. I was thinking of putting her on her back til she submitted. What do you think? Thanks. Long time since we had a puppy.

Leave It

we tried the back/submission thing with Kippah, and it did not work.  She hates being on her back --doesnt even like to lounge around on her back either.  I do know that it works well for some dogs though.

I would start right off with the 'leave it' command.  To teach that you can put a treat or a toy (what ever motivates them) on the floor as they try to go after it you put your foot over it while firmly saying "leave it", do that a few times, when they dont show interest in it you reward them.  You can also do that several times and then say take it, and place it in their mouth...but we did not use the 'take it' command with Kippah.

Once they learn the Leave IT, use it ALL the time, and make sure to continue to reward with a little treat for awhile.  Leave It can been when they start to lunge for something, when they sniff at your dinner, when they pull on a leash (after you have trained them to walk on a leash) anywhere when you want to stop the begining of a behavior that is undesirable.

It's an adorable mob scene!

If I'd been walking by, you can be sure I would have been part of the gang.  So sweet.

Long time for me too with the puppy...  but I think your idea is a good one.  Remember who is the alpha dog here  :)

Leave It

as well and offer a treat to get her away from where you want her without physically forcing.  That is the positive reinforcement method.

I have with all of my puppies done the roll on the back stuff.  I will roll them onto their back and actually growl at them if they are being bad.  And if you have ever heard Cesar and the voices he uses I will use a tone of voice with a strong  "NAWWWW  BAD"  something like that, just not "NO".  They hear no so much it has no meaning to them.  You have to come up with a command that gets them with "that tone" and only use it when they are being really bad.  And growling at you is very bad.

Looks like she has a very big fan group :)

with Tucker

we have put him on his side before and for him it worked. We kept him down until he did a big sigh(never took long) because that gave us the feeling that he was calm. Fortunately he doesn't really have behaviour now that warrants that technique. We didn't put him directly on his back but on his side with firm touch to the side at his chest and down by his hip or leg. This was not aggressive or extreme touch but just firm.

When he was a puppy and was doing LOTS of nipping and biting I would keep a small leash on him even in the house so that I could grab the leash if he came towards anyone to nip or bite. Note** He was never left alone with his leash on, ALWAYS supervised. That also helped when he would try to get something he shouldn't. We do tell him to "leave it" but it doesn't work the best. Let's just say that was the one thing he failed in training.

I love the pictures of the kids with Pheobe. I work in special education for the school board here in Toronto and i've brought Tucker in before to meet the kids I work with. He loved it and the kids loved it. I saw it as a teachable moment for the kids and Tucker. Unfortunately, lots of kids these days don't know how to act around a dog they don't know.

Once again you have one beautiful girl and we wish you the best of luck with her.
