Petsmart adventure looking at butts and more

After going to Petsmart last night, I've concluded that you can look at a maximum of 5 dog butts before they call the cops. I stopped at 4 and didn't get arrested. :-)   All of the dogs that I saw that had short hair, had some form of a butt swirl but none as cute as a bullies.

But the real adventure was with Jack who has decided to mark everywhere. I was hoping to finish up our intermediate obedience training (4 more weeks) before getting him neutered. But one of the dogs in class attacked him and the trainer was able to pull the dog away from Jack before he could hurt him. However the other dog would bark and lunge at Jack every chance he got. Jack had no clue what was going on or that he had gotten attacked. He has one little mark on his nose that is the size of a pea where its red but nothing more. This other dog also went after Jack's sibling but was really focused on Jack. They've been in class together for 8 wks and this has never been an issue so the trainer believes Jack is emitting a high testosterone level. So I'm calling today to see if we can't get Jack in next week to be neutered.  I know there was some who were on the fence about getting their dogs neutered or not. And I was too since we had no issues with our intact mastiff. But what is sealing the deal for me is not so much that Jack's behaviour would be an issue but that he would be a target for male dogs to attack. Its something that I never thought about until now and I feel lucky we came away from that incident with nothing more than a scratch.

And here is a pic of the Jack-opotomus enjoying his yard yesterday.

That's a good looking Jack-opotomus!

And how scary about the other dog!  Thank God your baby is ok (other than that one small scratch)!!  I will be thinking good thoughts for your boy when he goes in to have his "coin purse" removed!  Please keep us posted on all of that.

jack you are just a cutie

jack you are just a cutie pie!!!

poopoo to the other dog for attacking you!

my archie was neutered also...but in my case he was starting to get aggressive

w/my dad...his alpha was emerging and he was trying to get his dominancy across

and not always in a nice way...he attempted a few times w/me but i stood my ground...

i'm attributing his behaviour (and i could be wrong here) to him being rehomed...not sure

at all as to how he was treated...but one thing for sure was he was super healthy!

i got a trainer whom i was going to work w/ never for one second thinking the unthinkable

was going to happen...and belive me when i say as much as i grieved and still am so did my dad

along w/the rest of the family!!!...

keep us posted sweetie!!!

smoochies the scrunchy face

Is this a PetsMart Training Class?

IMO the other dog needs to be neutered (if not already) and it needs training.  I would never neuter my dog because of someone else and their inability to control their own dog.  The trainers excuse is ridiculous IMO.  Should you still neuter him....yes, I would.   But IMO it will not change the other dogs problem.  How old is he?  I have never neutered a male prior to 18 months, some people think it effects their growth.  I'm not sure I believe it does, I think genetics has more to do with their growth.

I agree but..

I agree with you that the other dog should have been controlled. But on a recent walk, we had a  loose dog charge us.  I was able to stop the dog by jumping in front of Jack and doing my best Cesar Milan impression. I don't know if the other dog knew Jack was intact or if it even mattered. Also, Jack is starting to mark and I want to keep him from doing it in the house, which he hasn't started.  I do agree with the trainer though. We've been with that other dog for almost 8 wks now and have had no issues with him. Its a neutered male dog that was formally a stray and only has issues with other intact males.  Jack will be 8 months next week and he's giving us clues that its definitely time to get him neutered. And I'm not sure if neutering early stunts their growth either but it doesn't matter. The chunk already weighs 57 lbs  and is a good height and shape for us. So if he stayed the same thats fine, if he continues to grow, thats fine too.

Thanks everyone!

Jack really has turned out to be a handsome guy. I give my daughter credit for picking him out. :-)

Fixed

I would like to rant for a minute. I know all the health reasons for getting my boy fixed, but choose not to. He was jumped on at a dog park ( that I no longer go to) and also has been told he could not board or play with other dogs at the local Ruff Housing doggy day care. When another dog jumps on mine ----That is the other dog and owners problem not mine as mine does not have an agreesive bone in his body. I find it highly stupid when a fixed dog goes after mine and the told it's my fault for not having him fixed. Thanks and rant off.
