I have about 10 brochures on pet insurance to go through but then thought why not just ask the people on BDW who they deal with. Any suggestions would be appreciated. You will probably have to send me a private message as I am not sure of the rules here. I live in Ontario - if that matters. Thanks.
I used PetSecure for Stella
And never got a claim turned down. My sis has had slightly less luck with them but I highly recommend it. They're out of Winnipeg.
Get it as SOON AS YOU CAN before anything pops up that they could claim as a "pre-existing condition". They're like any insurer, they'll get you if they can.
I chose the intermediate level - cost me about $65 a month but I got out WAY more than I put in in the end.
Wish we would have asked that ?
Our first vet (not a bulldog specialist) recommended VPI. Everything has been turned down so we are looking to switch companies.
Dont know if they cover
Dont know if they cover Canada but I have Healthy Paws. Got it based on really good reviews. They cover hereditary diseases which is important plus its an annual deductible as opposed to a per-condition deductible which I would think would be cheaper. I have saved up my claims and just sent them in this morning so I will let you know how well they reimburse.
we have insurance
for Tucker and we use Petsecure. We pay about the same amount as Celine says she pays(65/month) and it's the intermediate level. When we called them to set things up the "salesperson" discussed the breed, Tucker's age and then suggested which level to get. It didn't feel like they were making us/pushing us to get a higher level than needed. Our vet gave us a free 3 month trial with them when we first brought Tucker in. I'm not sure how long we'll keep him on insurance but better safe than sorry! Thankfully we haven't had too many health issues, fingers crossed.

Forgot to say......
... we live in Toronto. Not sure if this is a Canadian company. My cousin has an American Bulldog and she needs to have it's knees done. Petsecure told her that it's an inherited condition therefore they won't cover the surgery. Not sure why they'd say that becuase she is a rescue dog. Like I said, my experience has been positive. Good luck!

We love ours!!
We got Trupanion...and I just deposited our first claim checks. They have been amazing!! I submitted everything on a Thursday afternoon and by Saturday I had an email explaining what had been covered (everything they said would be- $1000 of a $1500 bill) and that a check was in the mail. We pay $60/month with a $130.00 deductable. Not sure if it's available in Canada but it is worth looking into. It was the best thing we ever did.
OMG!
That has to be the cutest picture ever!!!! I just want to rub that chubby tummy!!!

Trupanion
We also have them and love them. We did use PetFirst when Ozzy was little, but have found Trupanion much better
An insurance review site
When we were deciding on insurance I found petinsurancereviews.com and it was a big help. We use Trupanion and love it. Jax's knee surgery only cost us $200, the insurance picked up the rest.
Lyn
I just got Trupanion
I probably wouldn't do it for any other breed - but you know how many health problems bulldogs can have so better safe than sorry!
I just put away money in a
I just put away money in a little jar every week. Plus - I don't know about Ontario, but I have a membership with "Pet Assure", which basically discounts 25% of my vet bills, I have it instead of pet insurance.
Thanks but...
I just checked and they do not provide services in Canada. Might be the money jar thing for us too. Not really convinced that when all is said and done insurance is any cheaper than paying out of pocket. Need some one to convince me that the 45-60 dollars a month is money well spent.
did you
check out Petsecure??

Forgot to ask...
I know you live in Toronto. Just curious and you don't have to name the breeder but where abouts did you get Pheobe? Where was your breeder from?

I firmly believe it is 100% worth it
I claimed thousands and thousands of dollars over Stella's almost 12 years of life. I have a good job but some of the care she required would have put me in the poor house if it hadn't been for the insurance. Even if I had put aside $65 a month it wouldn't have even come close to covering her medical expenses. I, personally, would never have a bulldog without having pet insurance.
I know lots of people don't, but there's my convincing for today :)
good convincing!
I completely agree with you Celine. After all my bully research, just the fear alone of Tucker having a major issue was enough to put him on an insurance plan.

Aww, man! That sucks. See how
Aww, man! That sucks. See how cool it is to be an American? Lol
I have contacted Petsecure but,,,,,
they do not operate in Canada. And yes being an American is a good thing!!! I have two kids and two grandkids living in the States. The other comments re pet insurance really have me more confused to the point where I do not know what the best thing to do is.
yep!
That's weird, Petsecure is what we have Tucker on and we live in Toronto. I was just on the phone with them today asking about a claim. I know the claim forms now say "Western Financial Insurance" so maybe google that???

That's why they call it insurance ;)
Let's see if I can convince you. This is over 16 years and 5 bulldogs. I'm not including the yearly annual expenses which I think would be about $300 if they never got sick. Just the large out of the oridinary stuff.
Norbert ~ $60 x 12 = 720 x 7 = $5,040 - $2,000 = $3,040 + $2880 = $5,920. Up to 7 he only had his regular annual vet visits, 7 he had a knee surgery, then he did have expenses at 10 when he started getting irregular blood workups not even close to $5k worth and he passed at 11 1/2.
Cleo ~ $60 x 12 = $720 x 7 = $5040. Cleo had knee surgery around 1 year, then entropian, palate x2 and a spay and allergy testing. So she would have been a good candidate for insurance. She is 7.
MacKenzie ~ $60 x 12 = $720 x 9 = $6,480 Had an obstruction surgery, and this last constipation episode for about $5,000 worth of surgeries & anal invasion ;) He is 9.
Ester ~ $60 x 12 = $720 x 5 = $3600. Ester had a hairline fracture in a hind leg (accident) when she was a puppy. The xrays were about $500. Other then that she has been extremely healthy. Just annual stuff. I won't include her litter and c-section expenses, that year she was a money maker to the tune of $15,000 - $2,500 expenses. Now remind me why I'm not breeding her again, LOL! I only pocketed $2,500 of that total the balance when to her co-owner.
Kohl ~ Is a work in progress. He likely has to have a knee surgery, so not starting off good. But I will not do the TPLO. I have had great success with the extracapular surgery which is 1/2 the cost and far less invasive w/less possible complications. Time will tell, I'm trying the lock-up method, although I don't think that is a fix for the long haul.
Celine and Stella are definitely the exception I believe and it's a great thing she had insurance. I know there are others here that would have benefited with insurance. I just don't think on average that it pays over time.
Good to know...
I spoke with a rep at Pet Secore the other day and he had no idea it was available in Canada. At any rate thanks. I will definitely check out that site and see what they offer.
