Pemphigus diagnosis ...HELP

My 7 year old English Bulldog has had allergies in the past which have affected his skin. This past December his skin broke out extremely bad with crusty, scabby scales...I know, not a pretty picture, and it is absolutely horrible. At first my vet thought it was his allergies but after no relief and three months of assorted drugs we had biopsies done and he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Pemphigus. Currenly he is on Presdnisone and Azthioprine and has still had no relief.

Has anyone else had to deal with Pemphigus? IF yes, what treatments worked for you? We are at a loss. My dog is my world and I hate to see him suffer with this awful condition.

Thanks you !

Courtney

Sorry, no experienced :( but good luck !

I dont want you to think you have been overlooked, but unfortuantely I do not have any experience with that :(

Please keep us posted on your sweet boy.

Courtney, a question for you

where is he experiencing the sores?  On his face?

Sores

The sores are all over his whole body. His face is affected as well and his ears. His body started with a thick scaley scab underneath his hair. When you go to bath him the scab will come off along with the hair leaving an open nasty mess. The lesions weap constantly and form a new crust. Is yours having symptoms on his face?

I hope it is not ....

I hope your little man feels better and certainly hope he does not have this disease. If you think it is a possibility have the biopsy done of his skin soon.

I'm so sorry you guys are having to deal with this...

I don't have any experience in this particular disorder, but one of my dogs does have lupus. From what I have read with autoimmune disorders, trying to strengthen the immune system is a good thing. I put my girl on fish oil caps for the natural anti-inflammatory action, started a super premium food, and have her on NuVet tabs. I've also had people suggest VitC tabs and magnesium to boost the immune system. Also, I had to try to avoid stress for my girl as much as was feasible. We stopped competing but kept up the training (she loves it!) and exercise. She has been living with lupus for 10 years.

Rotti, I didn't know Kano has Lupus....

Poor girl, but sounds like she is dealing with it really well.

Love you girl. Hope all is well:-)

Yep

She was diagnosed just short of her second birthday.  She was taking 120 mg of pred twice a day!! The vet actually wanted to put her on 240 twice a day!!! Yikes!

She's had some really bad flare ups, and it didn't help that her symptoms kept changing, but I've managed to keep it fairly in check.  She has gone years between episodes, so I count myself pretty lucky. :)

I'm doing pretty good, Ames.  You really need to get a Facebook account!  I'll shoot ya an e-mail. :)

Thanks

Lupus was a possible diagnosis before we had our results from the biopsy. I am glad you were able to control the symptoms. I hope we catch a break and see some improvement soon.

As for the supplments he takes fish oil, vitamins and is on a grain free good food because of his allergies. Unfortunately these things did not control this nasty disease.

aww.....I'm so sad that your baby hasn't had any relief yet!!

and sorry, I am no help, I've never heard of this......Meaty and Sophie and  I will keep your sweetie in my prayers!!

P.S.....one thing mine both had as young pupps was an outbreak like you described, but it was quickly cured

with oral antibiotics, and neither of them had it after they were young....sorry I'm no help....

Thank you

We have tried numerous anitbiotics. There is no infection though so they were pointless. Now we are just on high dose of pred. and the azothioprine. My fingers are crossed it eventually kicks in and helps. I just spent the past hr picking scabs off his back and coating him in a gel made in Switzerland for burn patients. My Vet gave it to me and said it would help heal the skin....
