Patellar Luxation

We took Jax to the vet yesterday for his limping.  He has patellar luxation and will meet with the ortho on the 17th.  Has anyone had an experience with this.  I was reading on line and it appears that he will need to have surgery.  Any experience would be helpful

Thanks

My maverick has been dealing

My maverick has been dealing with this for most of his life now ( he's only a little over a year now though). When we first went in for it he was VERY limpy and was having a hard time getting around. Our vet who is VERY bulldog experienced gave him some anti inflamation meds and pain meds and wanted him to start taking glycoflex III. We did the pain meds and anti infamitory for a few weeks and kept up the glycoflex permanently. He does quite well with it now and the only time he has been limping in many months is when i ran out of the glycoflex for a couple days. As soon as he got those again he was fine in a day or so, and back to his crazy self. I am a pretty firm believer in that stuff and i think it has saved Mav from surgery. Plus we get the chews so he thinks they are a treat and loves them.

Something to think about before going to surgery,,, it certainly helped Maverick out a ton!!!!!

Thanks

That is going to be my first question to the ortho.  I would like to try and manage it with medication first and then see if surgery is still necessary.  His bulldog vet was really concerned because the femur is bowing a little, but she said for a bulldog it is not bad.  He is on the chewable anti inflamtorys now (and he loves them) so I will get some glycoflex and see where we are on the 17th.  I really DO NOT want to see him under go surgery unless it is the last resort.

The best place i have found

The best place i have found to get them is on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Glyco-Flex-III-Soft-Chews-Dogs-120-Count/dp/B002LVTTYE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317391194&sr=8-1

When all this started i was pretty scared of the surgery myself as Mav was in pretty bad shape. I hope these works as good for your guys as they did for mine.
