O/T - What Local Odd (human) food you have ever eaten ?

I was watching Travel Channel, and they said  'Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern' is going to do a series of shows here in the U.S.

Now we have our 'Oddities' in the North East (Central Pennsylvania) from ShooFly Pie, to Scrapple, to Hog Maul, to SoftShell Crabs (Some even think Raw Oysters are bizarre, but not to me YUMMMM)

So lets have it - what would be your local oddities ? you know, something you like to eat that would make alot of people cringe?

Rick  (Yea slow day at work)

Poutine

This is a sinful dish made up of french fries and grain cheese covered in brown gravy.  It was invented here in Quebec, although who exactly invented it is hotly contested :)

It's gained quite a bit of traction across Canada and I've even seen it in the States in a few places.

Yum we call them 'Gravy Fries'

some of the New York/New Jersey style Diners serve 'Gravy Fries'    Brown Gravy (Beef) over fries, and some do the Cheese too !

ahhh I can hear my arteries hardening now!

You MUST do the cheese

Otherwise, there's no point  :)

If you can get your poutine from a "chip stand" - usually an old bus or trailer - all the better!

I've tried all of the above from around the country plus:

Local Odd Food: Lutefisk. We both like it but we consider it a butter delivery system.

We've also had beef tonsils kabob style (when in Israel) which were wonderful.

Ok I looked it up...cause I THOUGHT it was, what it is...

I am still amazed at the 1st person who said -   'Hummm if I take this critter, and I soak it in (whatever) and then after a week, I string it up and put it in the sun to dry, it really MIGHT be good'

with Lutefish -  soaking it in Lye, still boggles me -   ok a food - lets poison it - then get rid of the poison after a few days - and then eat it, come on, who was the FIRST person to try this? (err the 1st person to survive trying this !   Whoops, dang it, was it soaking for 2 days or 5 days?!   LOL)

:) :)

Norwegian food (think Vikings)

This is not food meant to poison people. It's food meant to be carried on sailing ships or on long trips or through long winters where there is no access to other food. Think meat jerky or salt cod.

Of course, you soak away the lye (the same way that hominey is soaked in lye and then rinsed) and then bake or boil the lutefisk and then smoother it in white sauce or melted butter. You need the fat during the cold, cold winter.

Here in Canada...

those fries with gravy and curd cheese is known as "poutine" - a very favoured dish originating in the beautiful province of Quebec.

I dont know if it would

I dont know if it would really be considered a local thing, but I did have bacon gelato at a gelato place here once:)

oh yes

Dark Chocolate, salted Caramel and bacon Gelato.....had that here last summer it was fantastic!

My grandmother used to make a wonderful Sunday Pie.  It was like a meat pot pie, and we would have it at least once a month for Sunday dinner, everyone LOVED it.  And she would never let anyone help her make it, or share the recipe.

WELL, on her death bed all of us kids were around her and she started laughing....we thought it was the morphine, or dimencia....then she said "Sunday Pie, you kids loved Sunday Pie"  and we all agreed and started telling her how wonderful it was, then she laughed again, and said "opossum road kill"  that was my special ingredient.

OH.MY.WORD

The neighbor confirmed her story, she saw grandma out on the road during early mornings harvesting her pie ingredients.  Grandma was from Texas, but lived in the Pacific Northwest most of her adult life.  She brought a little Texas into everything!

Zoinks!

I think I'll stick with the fries, cheese and gravy!

Heck, I'd even choose bacon gelato over that...

AmyandSophia's picture

ROFLMBO!!!! Now THAT is not what you would want sweet grandma

To tell you. Never. I promptly called my mom and told her I DON'T WANT TO KNOW HER SECRET RECIPES. She laughed her butt off, now we are both bottomless.

and more stories

My older sister had a 6 year old when she re-married.  Her husband was a great guy, military career, been all over the world, and his mother was from the Philipines.  One day I came over and walked in to my niece and her new daddy eating lunch.  It looked HORRIBLE,  I asked what it was and George said it was Top Ramen, left over veggies, and some squid.  The thing is he used the WHOLE squid and it turned it purple because he did not bother to remove the ink sack.  BUT what made it really funny is that my niece told me it was Tenticle Soup...except in her 6 year old mind she replaced the N with an S.......my brother in law spewed his soup all over the kitchen table

I tried it

I tried it and it really was GOOD!  but after that he was kind enough to take the ink sack out for us sissies

My "tentacle" story

Just as your niece changed the "n" for an "s", my niece does the reverse.  We'll be watching TV or something, and she'll say "oh, he got kicked right in the tentacles!"  Cracks us up so much every time that no one wants to correct her!

hers one more..not weird food related, but related

I dont do well on medications, and a few years ago I had broncitus and was pretty sure I was going to die.  I hurt so bad and the doctors gave me percocet so I could rest comfortable.  My borther in law came to check in on me and the kids.  He asked how I was doing. I told him something to this effect "I hurt SO bad from all the coughing.  The pain starts at my scrotum and radiates out.

STERNUM  STERNUM STERNUM.....and this is what percocet does to me!

red solo cup

I have the 'honor' of hearing that song the other day as I took my daughter to school.  I used to like Country music, but now it just makes me mad because I relate me ex to country music, so half hour in I will find myself mad at the world (and all non child support paying parents especially)  LOL  Seriously....Red Solo Cup.....they really made a song about that???  I am still baffled

OHHH and how this thread has gone all over the board OT!  See what happens when you get bored at work Rick?  I am at work too, and have TONS of work to do but keep checking back for the next posts  LOL...If someones payroll is messed up this week I am just going to refer them to this thread

Rattlesnake.

But haven't had it for a long time. When we lived in Arizona, we used to take company to Rawhide. It was a wild west theme type place, where they actually raised, killed, and cooked rattlesnake for people to try. It wasn't bad, just stringy and not worth eating.
