O/T Sony question....

A friend of mine emailed me asking about this. I can't help her, but thought I would see if anyone here might be able to.

"To all my friends out there, I need help locating a disk.  I have a Sony Handycam (DCRl-TRV460) camcorder.  All the Handycams come with a CD disk called Picture Package.  This software is what is used to download the recordings off the camcorder tape/disk to your computer.  You can NOT download it without this program.  Unfortunately, I can not find this disk to reload the software and the software is NOT available ANYWHERE to download  (lots of online complaints about that!).  Sony does now have a replacement program (Picture Motion Browser) however, you have to have the original Picture Package disk to install the replacment. So, since so many Sony products use that program, I'm hoping some one of you out there has the disk.  If so, can I please ask that you make a copy and send it to me?  I would be more than happy to pay for not only the disk but also the shipping.  I'm trying to download wedding and trail riding videos."If you can help, let me know and I will put you in contact with her directly.

Just ignore me because I'm no help, sorry  =P

LOL!! Good point though!

I will have to mention that to her right away. But, if she is using a Sony device that even Sony themselves don't have the software for anymore, is her asking for someone to share existing software for an item she has already purchased and originally had the software for copyright infringement?

Yes and here is why

Copyright infringement is guarenteed "protection for the life of the author plus seventy years after the author's death" (Scheb & Scheb, 223).  This includes software programs.  By her asking for a copy of the disk to be made, without "their" permission is infringement. So even if the author created this software program 20 years ago and immediately died after,   the protection is still good for another 50 years.  I'm exaggerating the time because we didn't have this technology 20 years ago.

Ok I kind of feel like a nerd now lol

nah it would be considered a utility disk -

Its a disk that came with the Camera - and in order to make the camera functional you need this disk - so I'm not an expert, but I don't thing there would be a copywrite issue here.

Now what to do

1) contact Sony directly, and advise them of your issue

  A) You went to reload the disk after YOUR HARD DRIVE CRASHED, and you could not find it -

(this solves the issue, 'well use the old software on your pc, to upgrade to the new software  blah blah blah)

  B) I dont care what Sony will try to tell you, SOMEWHERE, *THEY* have the disk/programs you need since they sold the HandyCam originally -- It might cost you a 'replacement' charge, but SOMEWHERE they have it -  EMAIL their customer support -  CALL their Customer Support, -

DONT Be rude, just be FIRM, if you do not get a satisfactory answer for the 1st rep, ask to speak to their supervisor - if you do not get a satisfactory answer from them, keep asking for THEIR supervisor -  *MUST BE CALM*   *MUST BE POLITE AS ALL HELL*  *MUST SMILE EVEN WITH A MOUTHFUL OF  SH*T*  *KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS* *THANK YOU AND PLEASE THEM TO DEATH* -

alot of  'I understand that you are unable to . . .   Could I  PLEASE speak with your supervisor or someone else who YOU THINK could resolve this issue PLEASE' (try to get the representatives name - use the name and also write it down 'incase'

Dottie shakes her head at me when I have tech support on the phone, I have the ultimate slow burning fuse --  however, when enough is enough, I don't hesitate to contact anyone and everyone I can possibly contact to let them know how wronged I felt I was.

Quick story -  We were building a house, and in order to pickout our carpets, floors, fixtures etc, we had to drive 2 hours to their 'showroom house'  They told me the hours they were open, and I said "as late in the day as possible" - the woman got very lippy with me 'We have families that WE want to get home to etc' -

well  her 1st mistake was her attitude - (I am a customer, and because of people like me, YOU have a job for your kids!)

her second mistake was leaving me a VERY Attitude filled VoiceMail -

her third mistake was thinking that was the end of it.

It took me about 2 hours, to make a recording of her voice message to me, via the PC (through an old Microphone) making into a Wav file (Wayyy TOO BIG) and then ripping it down into MP3 so that I could attach it to an Email - well... lets see  'Google Company Name'  Oh boy.. LOOK at ALL of the Email addresses I found! the CEO, the Head of Sales, the Manager of this, the Manager of that, and 20 or 30 other people with that address -  well ya see, it only takes a second to add just one more name to an email I'm already writting ;)    I think I must of added 35-40 names -

*Sent Email*   within a few hours, I'm getting calls out of Texas (their headquarters) 'Mr. Rettinger this and Mr. Rettinger  that, and how can we solve this issue, and what can we do for you, and what time are you available we will BE available for you - Lots of Groveling, and boot licking by said company to keep my business -

My requirements were very simple  - 'as late in the day as possible - oh and I do NOT want to have any contact with this woman - so you need to have someone else handled my appointment.'         their reply -  No Problem :)

.

dang I get long winded almost as bad as Kippahs mom ;) hee hee -   anyway, back to the question - Contact Sony, directly - via all means possible :)

Are you kin to me?

My family thinks I'm nuts because when I get mad over bad customer service, I'm like a bulldog and won't let the issue go.  But on another note about the disk, try Amazon.com, ebay etc etc.  Someone, somewhere has a copy of that disk or is capable of making a copy. You just have to look in the right place.

They have 5 different ones

If your friend clicks on the link in the previous post, there is a section for the picture package disks/programs. They offer 5 different ones.
