O/T Road trip to Eastern Maine area -- suggestions?

We'll be leaving Delaware driving up I-95 to get past NYC -

We were told about Mystic Seaport in Conn. (So that's going to be a stop)

our goal is the coast of Maine, and see the quaint little seaside fishing villages that (I am imaginging) are up there.

We like to take the scenic ride (but to get to a destination, dont want a drive into the back woods to have to turn around and come out)

Other sites we were told about   L.L. Bean in Freeport -  a 'must stop' as an outdoors buddy has told me -

question -  Bar Harbor is it worth the trip to go all the way up there?

what about other areas of coastal Maine? any other must see's?  what about the return trip? anything in MASS?  we arent really looking for Tourist Traps and lots of people (ok LL Bean will be our 'dose' of tourist traps I guess) as much as historical little towns, with the old time workmanship - arcitectures etc

We dont have to worry about it being Pet Friendly, as Gizmo is all set up for a week 'at the Spa' I think her accommodations will be better than some of ours !    http://bestvetyet.com/main/?p=17

.

So, what else to do? and see?  and any suggestions for good food locations ?  I go on FOOD Vacations - I could eat seafood 24/7 while on vacation - I tried to do it with BBQ while in Carolina's and Tennessee last year !

It might be a little 'early' for season to begin, but hopefully the rates will still be low, while things being open for us :)

.

Thanks!

I LOVE MAINE!!

I was just there this weekend - in Portland which is beautiful. I live in Mass so Im lucky enough to live close to maine!  Kittery has a ton of shops, Ogonquit is a quaint little town and beautiful too.  Sebago Lake is my favorite. I have to say, no matter where you go in Maine you will absolutely love it!  Have a fabulous trip!!

ooh maine is beautiful-have a

ooh maine is beautiful-have a blast guys!!!

i'm sure you'll find your way around...lol,

smoochies to gizzy girl

I am a proud Mainer!

While I live in NYC, my heart will always remain in Maine and I am up there all the time! I could go on and on about where to go, but I am from Kennebunk/Kennebunkport and if you are looking for a quaint ocean village, then that is it! The best part is that is in southern Maine so it isn't too much of a drive (although Bar Harbor is absolutely stunning so if you can, I would definitely venture up there). So... I will detail a couple of MUST GO places below and feel free to PM me for more info!

1. Big Daddy's (Route 1, Wells, ME): The best homeade ice cream I have ever had (oreo is my favorite). When I am up there I go 2-3 times and usually drag my entire family :-) It is a great place to stop on your way up to kick off the vacation.

2. The Ramp: It is in a little fishing village called Cape Porpoise which is a subset of Kennebunkport. If you are looking for picturesque, this is it (I also might be biased as The Ramp and its mother restaurant Pier 77 (much fancier) used to by my parents restaurant. The food is local and delicious.

3. Federal Jacks (Lower Village, Kennebunk): If you are a beer fan, this is where is where Shipyard was created. Good food and great beer.

4. The Wharf (Kennebunkport): Perfect for sunset drinks as they have a huge deck with adirondack chairs

5. Goose Rocks Beack (Goose Rocks, Kennebunkport): One of the most beautiful beaches in the area and doesn't have really big waves so Gizmo would be a happy puppy!

6. Dock Square (Kennebunkport): This is the center of the ocean village and there are so many adorable shops (Abacus is my favorite). It is great to just walk around, grab a lobster roll and enjoy the scenery.

7. Freeport: How could you not visit the flagship store of LL Bean (open 24 hours/365 days a year too)??? In addition it is a really cute town and great shopping. I am addicted to the outlets up there.

Ok, I could go on and on... but that is just the tip of the iceburg. Have fun planning!

We WILL Chat at the Wonderbar Saturday ! ! !

We are looking forward to meeting you all anyhow at the Wonderbar Saturday, but now we'll have something even MORE to talk ! ! ! !

Thanks for the info ! !  we are writting it all down :)

Sounds like fun.

Is Gizmo going with ya? I wish I was getting away on a road trip.  Never been up North but always wanted to go in the fall just to see the colors of the trees.

JEALOUS!

I've always wanted to live in Maine but would settle for just a visit. One day soon I hope. Its strange but the Stephen King movies made Maine look like a beautiful place to see.

Wish I could

We've got the dog house-trained, but we're still working on the toddler.  My youngest doesn't want to wear diapers or panties so we're kind of stuck at home for the moment. I might resort to crate training her. LOL
