Hello all.
We have adopted (since Labor Day 2011) a little bulldog male. He turned one year old in last week. He was not a mill puppy, he was raised in someone's home. They moved, they couldn't take him, so he went into a pound. Doberman rescue of IL got him out and we found him there. We have another male bulldog rescue who is almost 4 years old.
The puppy has no issue with urinating on bedding and lying in it...I mean lying in it and turning himself a stinky stained yellow. He is in a crate while we are at work as he is a furniture chewer. Our dog walker comes in to let him out a couple times a day and had begun noticing he pees on the bedding in his crate. He never urinates or hikes on things...just bedding.
I began removing the bedding from the crate...voila. NO URINATING.
At night he sleeps in our room with us on his own bed (the other bulldog sleeps on his own bedding, they each have their own.) This puppy who does not urinate in a crate if there is no bedding has now begun urinating on his bed in our bedroom. I removed the bedding and he will go onto the other bullie's bedding and pee on it and him.
In all my years with bulldogs (both rescue and "homegrown") I have never had an issue with this and don't know (other than a belly band at night and no bedding in the crate) how to work this issue out...anyone?
I would love any thoughts. My preference is not to crate him at night with no bedding...I'd rather adress the cause of this if I can.
is he fixed? is he on any medication?
These are my 1st two questions -
Have you ruled out any possible medical issues?
Remove water from him in the evening and make sure he has gone before bed (i'm sure you have done this)
I'd definately be crating him at night, w/out bedding until you can figure out if its a medical issue or not.
Only my suggestion

Custer has been neutered and
Custer has been neutered and is on no medications. The vet says there is nothing wrong with him physically.
Yesterday I had to crate him for two hours to run to the hospital for tests. I put no bedding in with him. I came home and was giddy with glee because there was no urine in the crate. That was until he stood up and I see that he has laid in the urine and it has dried on him...he effectively dried out his crate by letting his hide soak up the urine. I'm at my wits end with this one. I love that dog like crazy (which is likely a good thing) and I believe he has some special needs issues, but I have no idea how to alter this behavior. I've never had a dog that would urinate and lie in it.
I may have to go to a belly band for these times. Thank you for your input.
In my opinion he is marking...
our boy used to do this also. Newman was 8 months old when we got him and he was a kennel dog, raised with love but basically in a kennel with several other bulldogs. We had him in a crate for a long time and whenever I would put in a pad or towel,he would pee or 'mark' it. He also did this do all of our doggie pillows. We would put him in the bare crate when we were not home and at night, I used an ex pen to keep him confined near our bed and he slept on the floor. He's 1 1/2 now and the behavior has pretty much stopped. We do keep a careful eye on him though.
Thank you for the reply. I
Thank you for the reply. I think Custer was kept in a crate a great deal too, which is why I didn't want to put him in if not necessary. I'll have to look into penning him on the tile floor in the master bath at night. That way he'll be close to us (which he feels is a MUST) our other boy can have his soft, snuggly bed, and we can see how he does. I think this may be a very good option and thank you for giving me hope.
