Does anyone elses bullie seem to always get attacked? There are a tons of really nice dogs in our neighborhood but something about Oliver brings out aggression. Oliver has never ever tried to bite another dog, he will do the sniff things and sometimes will engage others to play, but now two times he has been attacked for no reason at all. On our walk yesterday two dogs were playing off leash and whenthey saw Oliver they ran over. They were just sniffing each other and then the one dog just attacked him. I know these dogs and they are not aggresive so I dont know if its something about his body language that they dont like? He is fixed so thats not an issue. I wonder if this is a problem with bulldogs in general. Just trying to figure out the best way to protect my boy.
There is something about Bulldogs that other dogs don't like...
Sometimes. I have seen it before, and even with my own Bullie girl sometimes a non-bully breed will have a bad reaction to her.
If I were you, I guess I would hoist him up the minute I saw off leash dogs while you are out walking. Get that boy off teh ground and back home where he will be safe.
And you're a Doc. Clean those wounds well:-) LOL! I feel stupid telling you that, but you never know:-) And give that baby a smooch for me.

Cesar Millan says its cuz of their stance! They kinda puff the
chest out - cuz they use there eyes' first because they dont smell things so easy like regular snouted dogs. When they're looking all puffed up they look like a threat to other dogs. Well I'm no pro but it made sense to mel. lol
i think cesar is a puff ball
i think cesar is a puff ball himself when it comes to bullies, lol
Only issue Gizmo's had 'sniffing'
when they are doing the 'sniff test' she (like most dogs) tends to lift her head when sniffing... well we know how bulldogs lower jaws are... POKEY POKEY in a Puppy's Private area w/ TOOFYs !

Leash law?
We have two Jack Russell terriers nearby & they are never on a leash. Most towns these days have leash laws, you may want to look into your town's laws & give the owners a reminder. Poor Oliver, I hope he's OK.

Poor guy
Our trainer says that some dogs will find the bulldogs intimidating because of the noises they make and how they walk. I never really thought about it but I guess our guys do breathe loudly, snort and snuffle more than the average dog. I had to stop walking Jack in the neighborhood because a dog charged us. I did my best Cesar Milan impression and the dog stopped in its tracks. But it could have been bad because this dog was with 3 other dogs. One was chained to a tree, one listened to the owner when it got called back and then the one that came at us. I just bought some mace and if a dog tries to come at us again, I will use it. Normally I would have had my two small children with me so I was extremely lucky that day. My fear is that not only would Jack be hurt, but that this could cause him to be aggressive and mistrustful of other dogs too.

Thanks for the advice. I
Thanks for the advice. I agree that there must be something about the stance, noise, lack of tail, etc that bulldogs have that sets some dogs off. Unfortunately we live in front of this big green belt area that everyone uses to walk their dogs and almost none are leashed. Luckily I know almost all of the dogs but will definitely be more active in blocking new dogs from getting too close to Oliver. I dont think the poor guy knows why other dogs dont like him either. His ear is fine. He had two small punctures on the inside that have scabbed over and a 1 cm laceration on the ouside which is luckily within a wrinkle so not under any tension and thats scabbed over too. There was quite a bit a blood at first which was scary. Just kept it nice and clean. Has anyone used this stuff vetericyn? I guess its just superoxidized water and is antimicrobial and helps with wound healing. I'm skeptical but theres data that says it works. Thanks again, reassuring that its not just something about Oliver.
I'm glad he's doing
I'm glad he's doing better....so scary to be attacked!
I can vouge for the Vetrycin. I used it to treat a horrible hot spot that Vern had and it worked wonderfully! I even use it, on occassion, to clean under his nose wrinkle.
Glad he is ok..
how scary of a situation! And I agree about bulldogs being a target. There is a schnauzer in our training class that growls and spits at Gage every time he is within eye shot. He did the same thing last week when we brought Oliver to class for a visit. Both my boys were at my feet, minding their own business, and this schnauzer just charged them out of know where!
