Not sure I totally agree with the vet. Just brought Kia to the vet for her year old check up and was told that she is obese. She'll be a yr old on the 28th and weighs 54 lbs. Mom is 50# and dad is 60#. both mom and dad are show dogs and in good health. Yes, she may be a few pounds heavy but, obese, not too sure about that, she's in great health other wise; by the way, she was the largest in her litter 7.
obese
No, Bulldogs are not obese at this weight. I suggest you see a vet that is very well acquainted with Bullies. Then when you truely have a health problem you will have a proper diagnois... This is not correct for The English Bulldog weight standard. Actually, Bullies can carry a little a more than suggested.. They are a stocky, big bone breed. They can carry a liitle weight around the neck area easily as their body is built in front to carry the extra weight. This breed is exremely sturdy and compact. They may appear to be obese but, don't let this fool you. This is a sturdy little monster...with a heart of gold......

Obese
Thank you very much, this is what we were thinking. I had a hard time sitting there hearing this vet insult our baby, but I held my tongue. I'm making an appt with a bulldog vet tomorrow.
Depends on the dog
Some dogs would be obese at 54 lbs. One of my girls weighs about 42 lbs and that is a little heavy for her. Another of my girls weighs about 54 lbs and that's a good weight for her because she is very long.
So, it's hard to comment on your girl's weight without seeing her. But, that does sound a little heavy for a girl that young. My girls usually gain a few lbs. at about 3-4 years when they start to slow down a little.
agree - Depends on the dog
We try to keep Gizmo around 50-52 lbs, as it looks like a healthy weight for her, she isnt struggling breathing or mobility wise, nor is she a bag of bones, that is lathargic. For her shape and size, we feel comfortable with her weight. We've had one vet mention 'She could lose a pound or two' and the next vet (same practice) says 'she's a good weight, but keep an eye on her, as they could put it on quickly if not watched.'
Each case is as different as each dog.

Depends
I think like people, dogs can vary. But you can look at different parts of a dogs body to see if they might be a little heavier. If you are looking down at the dog as they are standing normally, you should see a tapering of the waist. Less tapering would be a dog on the heavier side. My vet said our puppy was gaining too much weight but from what I've seen, he didn't gain any faster than some bulldog puppies. I'm going by his appearance and I'm watching his waist line.

I agree
Ozzy weighs about 58lbs and he looks perfect. Jax weighs 53 and he looks perfect. Ozzy is a bigger bully than Jax is so the weight difference is due to that. Ozzy is heavy when he is over 60 and Jax over 55

I also agree depends on the dog
Just look around on any forum or site and it's hard to find that 40 pd bulldog. God know I wish my little whale was 40 pds also. So bullies are just big. All vets are always saying they need to lose weight. I don't think I would let her try to get huge but as long as she active then I would try to keep her weight as much as you can where she is now. You did say she was the largest puppy out of her littler. I have seen bulldogs that never even get up to 40 also. So I am saying what they said depends on the dog.

I know others have said it
I know others have said it already -- but it definitely depends on the dog, and you can tell a lot more by her shape than by the numbers. Beatrix weighs in at only 38 to 40 pounds, which is a healthy weight for her -- she's very petite. If she weighed 54 pounds, she would be VERY unhealthy! But, as I said -- she's also very petite in general for a bulldog. I know a lot of bullies are much larger than her, and would be a bag of bones at 38 pounds.
uh oh....gracie may be in trouble!
Gracie turned 8 months old on the 4th and weighs 60 lbs. She is a giant female bulldog. The biggest in her litter - bigger than the male. People that stop to pet her always think it's a male (so glad I now have a collar with pink flowers on it!) Her mother and father were both big. She has a massive neck already and I can tell she is going to be naturally big. But I don't think she is obese. She isn't even a year old yet and she is still growing so Im not going to worry just yet. I did cut back on her food to see if that helps but she doesn't look fat to me!! I think she looks beautiful.
I agree that it depends on
I agree that it depends on the dog... Ernie is just over 10 months old and he weighed in at the vet at 55.6 pounds and they dont feel that hes over weight at all, and nor does he look like it.

Obese
I had some Trach xrays done on Kohl a couple of months ago and the report by the radiologist said he was obese. So I asked my vet if he thought he was obese and he said NO, not at all, but that every xray he gets back on a bulldog always says they are obese. At this point I think my dogs are actually a little skinny. I can easily feel back and rib bones. I'm actually trying to put weight on Ester. What I have found with RAW feeding is that they definitely loose weight.
So if you cannot feel ribs and there is no visable waist then yes she is over weight.
