We got Mr. Bentley about a month ago. He is 1 1/2 years old. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. He came with many health issues though. He is overweight (he weighs 70 lbs), he has a cherry eye and his tail was infected. He also has skin and breathing issues due to his weight (the vet said). But he is a very friendly, playful, loving tubby :) He loves to play soccer with the kids and go for walks and play in his pool...

Welcome
what a handsome fellow he is. Cute pic. =)
What a sweet boy.
What a sweet boy. Congratulations! How are his health issues coming along?
just starting
We took him to the vet yesterday. We thought we had the tail issues under control but it got bad so we took him in. They shaved and cleaned him and put him on 21 days of antibiotics. We thought he was losing weight but apparetly he has either gained or we were told he weighed less when we got him then he actually did. They want him on Hill's Prescription Diet R/D to help him lose. Once we get his weight under control then we are going to address the cherry eye

Awww!
What a doll! Looks like he loves chilling in his pool.
I've heard that adding green beans to their food is a great way to help bullies lose weight. Their bowl is still full of good stuff so they don't feel cheated and they get less of the high calory food. So everybody wins. Of course, his humans have to resist giving him too many treats - and no "people food". You must RESIST the stare - I know, it's not easy. They can be devils that way :)
And the cherry eye is a pretty quick fix with surgery. The tail can be more complicated but is also fixable in a lot of ways.
Congrats on your new boy - and keep us posted on his progress. And by that I mean provide a lot, a lot of photos :)
green beans
I have heard about this diet. How does it work?

Advice on green bean "diet" - anyone?
I haven't done it myself, but my understanding is just that you substitute some green beans for food. I know several people have done it successfully, which is why I put the "shout out" in the title. You'll probably get more useful help from others (I'm not being that useful, I know).
Sounds like you've got some work ahead but that you have everything under control. Bullies can be a bit of a "project" but absolutely worth it in the end! Your boy should be nice and 100% healthy in no time!
We've had Chester on this diet for a while now...
He needs to drop a few to help his acl problem. We just give him 1/2 cup of kibble twice a day and put a cup of cooked frozen green beans on each meal. He looks a little thinner, it's a slow process since we can't exercise him a lot.
Welcome to BDW...What a cutie pie.
Keep us updated on his progress, and also lots of pictures.
Green Beans
I used canned green beans with dinner for a rescue Shepard that needed to drop 40 pounds (poor baby) they serve as a filler, they have some nutrition, little to no carbs, and some fiber.
We used frozen cut green beans, as well as apple hunks for treats.
In 9 months we had her at ideal weight and ready to be adopted and put through service dog training.
On a side note green beans are perfect for adults too..for all the same reasons!

Careful with the salt content in the canned

Good point!
Frozen or fresh is probably better. Like for us hoomans :)
Frozen I think is better ... and rinse them

Welcome
How lucky you are to have Mr Bentley and how lucky he is to have you.
Welcome to the site. I am not
Welcome to the site. I am not saying your vet is wrong about the weight of your bully but some vets don't realize that bullies look to be overweight. What I mean is my Brewer is 60 lbs. He's been that weight since he was 6 months old. One vet told me Brewer needed to lose 10 lbs. Well Brewers dad was 70lbs of pure muscle. Brewer and I walk 2 miles a day and is also musclular. When I switched to the vet that my breeder goes through (one that knows more about bulldogs) he said Brewers weight was just fine. So depending on how you feel about his weight issues you may want to get a second opinion. Again not saying the vet is wrong, just something I went through with my Brewer.
But either way, chubby or not, I am glad he's here!
