we have FINALLY decided to get Diesel neutured and the appointment is set for thursday. we are hoping that this will calm him down a little ( hopefully a LOT) our vet has given us a lot of info and asked if we wanted to use the cone after his surgery. We are on the fence with this becasue we dont think Diesel will be able to reach this area and we worry that wearing the cone will create more issues than not. Diesel hates anything on his head or neck. Any suggestions or advice others have gone threw would be great! also we are trying to rack our brains with ideas of how of how to keep him calm and chill during the recovery stage....thankssss!!!
BigD
did your vet mention how he
did your vet mention how he closes up the wound? ours used buried stitches so nothing was exposed even if oliver was curious about what was going on down there. i think he might have sniff or licked his wound once or twice but we told him to leave it and he didn't really pay attention to it at all. i dont think many bulldogs can reach down there anyways. i think the more important thing is keeping his activity a little low in terms of running around for the first few days. good luck to diesel. by the way, we also hoped the neuter would calm oliver down but no dice!
Highly Unlikely
he needs a cane. I have never seen a bulldog that could reach those parts. I've had 2 neutered and a cone was not needed.
Cone Of Shame
I doubt that the cone of shame would be needed, since I have yet to meet a bulldog that can reach back there. I don't think any dog likes the cone of shame. Oliver and Rocco would drop their heads when we put theirs on. It might not hurt to have one at the house, but I don't think you will need it.

a trick that might 'calm' him . . .
I've said about this before here, but incase you havent seen this goofy idea work, it DOES work (atleast with Gizmo)
.
We have a snug fitting Shirt we put on her, or her harness works - its like immediate calm down - to the point the grandkids can come over and be bouncing everywhere, and when we put the shirt, or harness on, its an auto calming device - no more jumping, no more barking, just gives us that sheepish... oh WHY did you put this on me Daddy! ! ! ! look :)
I dont know why it works, but it does. We went to the local pet box store and they sell 'Thunder Shirts' which is basically a high $$$ way of doing what we discovered with Gizmo.
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
Tuckers experience
Tucker was neutered at 7 months. We didn't have a cone for him initially because the vet said he hadn't been trying to reach "down there" and we didn't think he'd be able to reach. Well, as we walked to the car Tucker decided he wanted to check things out so my husband and I wanted to make sure he didn't touch the area and went back and got him a collar.
I felt soooo bad. He couldn't even walk around with it on. We ended up only using it for a day or so. I stayed home from work the day after his surgery becuase I felt bad leaving him in his crate with the collar on. Overall he couldn't even reach the area to lick it or try and scratch it.
Tucker was still crazy hyper and even though we were told to keep him calm and inside I HAD to take him for a couple short walks each day. The poor guy just wanted to play. We just tried to keep him happy so he got lots of snuggles and some extra special treats.
This pic is a few hrs after we brought him home. He recovered pretty quickly.

We are a week ahead of you on neutering
Just had our little guy neutered last Thursday. He just turned 6 months and weighs about 37 pounds. He also had the soft palate surgery done at the same time. Dropped him off at 9 am and got a call by 11 am that he did awesome with both. We picked him up about 6 pm and he was super excited to see us but by the time we got home he was zonked out. They told us to keep him calm and not to let him jump up on the couch and such so I would pick him up and put him on the couch and we cuddled for the night. We gave him the pain meds that they sent us home with twice a day and we are ending those today. He slept through the night after surgery and never showed any signs of pain. The one thing he did do that I thought was strange was he slept more sitting up, kinda like he was afraid to lay down but eventually feel to the floor in slumber! The day after surgery (Friday) he was still not totally himself and just laid around. By Friday night and Saturday he was back to normal. We did not have to use a cone and he really showed no interest in that area and I don't think he could reach it if he tried. Goodluck to you.
MY Diesel
My big baby diesel had it done and he never noticed or at least he didnt act like he cared a whole lot. just keep him drugged for 2 days or what ever the vet gives you. but we never used the cone of shame. well we tried to but like your diesel my diesel hates it also so we didnt even use it really.
I usually wait till my male bullies are around 2 years old
to neuter them. I have never had to use a cone on any of them because of the way they are built most of them cannot even reach that area. Good luck with your guy. Sending hugs and kisses his way.
Our experience a couple of months ago
We just had Jack neutered when he was about 8 months. We had planned on waiting but everywhere we went, he was marking his territory and having other male dogs get aggressive with him. For his part, he thought the other dogs wanted to play. We didn't go with the cone because we were absolutely sure he could not reach the surgery site. Keeping him calm was impossible unless we crated him. Right after picking him up from the vet and taking him out to do his business, he promptly did laps around the yard with me chasing him. Jack didn't jump up on any of the furniture but he would occassionally run around and just be crazy. He still healed up fine. I'm sure Diesel will be just fine too.
