Neutering done - some ?s about pain

Neutering is done and the vet said that he did awesome.  Also got the soft palate done at the same time.  Picked the little guy up and he was excited to see us but then pretty laid back the rest of the night which is what I expected.  Gave him pain meds this morning and he still seems a bit under the weather.  Doesn't have interest in his toys and just basically laying around.  I was told to give pain meds twice a day but I hate that he can't tell us that he's in pain or not.  I've heard people say that their babies are back to normal the next day so of course I'm concerned a bit.  I'm just going to let him lay around (he's a bully after all!) and be king of the couch for the next few days but curious how other's reacted.  I'm sure it's a bit more recovery than the standard neutering since he had the other procedure as well.

Pretty sure its mostly the

Pretty sure its mostly the meds wearing off.  Oliver slept all day after his surgery but back to normal the day after.  We were supposed to only allow leashed walks but let him run around after a couple of days.  We kept giving him the pain meds but he sure didn't act like he was in much pain.  Your baby will be feeling great in no time.

The palate surgery is painful...

think of how it would feel to have your throat cut or tonsils out.  Chester took about a week to get back to normal after palate surgery and if he got excited, he would start coughing.  I would continue the pain meds for a few days, it helps them heal if they are not dealing with pain and sleeping is also good.

He should be kept quiet

for 2 weeks after palate surgery.  Panting and getting excited just puts strain on the areas that has been trimmed.  He should be sore and his throat is likely sore from being intubated.

The neuter is usually a piece of cake, especially if he is a young dog. Older dogs usually have more fluid buildup and swelling after surgery.

He will feel better in a couple of days but he should not be charging around playing and exerting himself untill he is fully healed. He should be kept quiet and cool.

Thanks all!

We are chillin' on the couch and the little guy seems to be perking up a bit.  Good excuse to do nothing and love the dog!
