Ok, seeing the noobie join in, I was like "Chef D" there HAS to be a reason, and a story behind that name -
Ok its time to find out why Kippah is a Kippah, Why Stella is a Stella, why Winston is a Professor LOL
.
Is it their looks? do they remnd you of someone? are they named after a friend? Character? I saw a cute Bullie Puppy (Very Similar to "Chef D" this is all white with a 'black-eye' his name, fitting enough is SHINER)
Lets hear those stories in between catching rays and enjoying spring :)

How Beatrix got her name
Mike and I threw a lot of names around trying to find the right one for Beatrix. I wanted to name her "Lorem Ipsum", but he stamped that idea out pretty quickly. We almost named her Wednesday, after Wednesday Addams.
Since Mike is a writer, though, he has about 50 baby name websites bookmarked, that he references when he wants a particular kind of name for a character. So he started browsing, and focused on Germanic names, since we didn't really want an overly girly name for her. "Beatrix" means "traveller", and we knew she'd be going everywhere with us, so we thought a name with some meaning would be good. We rolled the name around our tongues for a couple of days, and it just kept feeling right.
So, Beatrix she is.
what a lovely story!!! but i
what a lovely story!!! but i swear i woulda thought beatrix for sure from kill bill...
only b/c she was kick a$$ !!! lol,she is a beauty though!!!
Do you know, you're one of
Do you know, you're one of only two people who thought of Beatrix Kiddo? The other guesses, in order of popularity are:
Beatrix Potter
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands
Beatrix Lestrange (at which point I always have to grit my teeth and tell them that that was Bellatrix, not Beatrix)
lol !!!well great minds think
lol !!!well great minds think alike and only fools think differently!!!
lol @ gritting your teeth...hahahahaha
Great name
I love Beatrix's name and the meaning. Very fitting for such a pretty girl.
Nakina
I do love her name!
And I laughed about Bellatrix. I'd have a hard time not sighing and shaking my head in shame at them...

honestly...i have no idea
honestly...i have no idea where the name archibald came from...but first time i saw
that "wawanesa" insurance billboard sign by the highway driving w/my husband
one day i said look honey...there's our archibald!lol
i prolly musta read it somewhere...b/c from years before i even got my archie
i was always saying how that's what i would name him!lol
Funny thing is when ppl stopped us to pet him or take pics of him or just ooh and ahh
over him...when they found out his name was archibald they would freak out even more
saying how it actually suited him-which made my heart swell w/pride...*giggling*,it still does of course
w/a gulp on my throat...
the bar is already set high on the name on the next bugaboo i eventually will be getting...,lol
He looked like an Archie
Thats a very fitting name for Archie. Archie is one of those names that give you a warm fuzzy feeling. I can't wait to see what your future bugaboo will be named.

Kippah
Well Kippah is Kippah because when we saw our very first picture of her and her siblings the spot ontop of her head really stuck out to us. Especially at her tiny size then, that spot really stuck out. So she was named after the formal Jewish head covering "Kippah"---most commonly known as a Yarmulke. Paul also wanted to call her beanie..I vetoed that. He wanted to call her Yarmulke--Yami for short-- I vetoed that too
We came across a Jewish man at the Farmers Market last year and he asked her name. I told him and he was taken back a bit, seemed offended maybe. And that was my only hesitation in calling her Kippah. But we talked to him for some time, and Kippah loved on him and tried to steal his Apricot.....so I am pretty sure he left loving her AND her name.
HEY, look how much shorter she is than her sister.....I just remembered that the breeder said she was the shortest....another reason for me not to worry about her being a little lighter than I expected
Both of these are the breeders pictures photos when she was about 5 weeks old. Her "kippah" spot is not as prominate now.....and I call it her Kissah spot!
Loves and Smooches, Kippa and Mama (Annette)
and the next one
The next one will be named Ukiah. (you-KY-ah)
It is a town in North Central Oregon, never been there but drove past the exit sign for it last month. I knew that was THE name..male or female. My daughter has issue with that, because her name is Mikaela, then we have the Boston "Meana" and we have Kippah..then add a Ukiah....
She said we cannot end all the names in AH..because when we call the dogs she comes out of her room thinking we called her.....tooo bad, there is probably something she need to come out of her room to do anyway!
Loves and Smooches, Kippa and Mama (Annette)
hahahaha...i like that!!!

My husband is a chef by profession. At some point (long before meeting me) he decided Chef D ("d" for dog) would be a good name for his future bulldog (he always wanted a bulldog).
I normally just call him Chef.

Chef D -- ChefDEE --- SHIFTY
With a little northern accent, and how we speak faster than we need to up here - its almost like saying "Chef - D" would be turned into SHIFTY -
nah, I like CHEF D(og) Better :) You'll have to have your husband post his favorite receipe sometime, whatever he is really known for :) (I love to Eat, and Cook, and I'm always looking for ideas!) LOL

Professor Winston:
came to me from rescue with the name Winston. I figured that was the only constant in his life up to that point so we'd keep it that way. As he's been with us lots of nicknames and pet names have come about:
* Professor Winston vonWinstonhoffer Snorgleson Esq III - came about during a grueling study session for one of my courses for work to earn my designations. From there we've gotten "Professor" "Hoffer" "Snorgleson"
* Junior - he is my boyfriend's shadow and glued to his side so I've nicknamed the two of them Dude Sr and Dude Jr.
* Spotters - I call his belly spots his "cow spots" and that's where the nickname came from.
* Paso - we were able to track his "pre-rescue history" to El Paso. So he sometimes goes by Paso, or Paso Pup, or Paso Pistol (when he's fired up).
Those are the most common for him and the stories behind them. :)

My sister got a rescue dog and was going to change her name. Then her kids all looked at her and said "would you want our names changed if we had to go to a different family?". There was no name change.
Chef D's Mug Shot
Love them all
I love the nicknames. Jack has a few but they all still start with Jack as in Jack-opotomus, Jack A@# (this one when he's being bad), Jack rabbit, etc.
Nakina
Jack's story
Jack was supposed to be Gibby (from a kid's show). But we also thought about honoring my husband's Navy career by trying to come up with a name that meant something to my husband. At around the time we got Jack, my daughter started playing the Pirates of the Caribbean lego wii game. We think Capt. Jack Sparrow is hilarious and so we named Jack after him. I think if Jack were human, he'd be exactly like the original Capt. Jack.
Nakina
aww...how sweet and fitting

Gizmo's name origin -
When we rescued her, her name was Chloe - she just didnt seem like a 'Chloe' - the more I looked at her, the more she reminded me of the poster from the movie from the 1980's 'GREMLINS' The 1st Mogwai - that was purchased in the old Chinatown shop, was named GIZMO - the look on her face, with her ears sticking up - just struck me to fit :)
We've been in PetSm*rt and PetC* before - and of course people ask her name, and we have heard 'She LOOKS like a GIZMO' so it seems to be a hit - the grandkids (and Dottie) call her GIZZY -

Bear's registered name is River Citys Iron Mike (after Ditka. We do live in Chgo ya know) I didn't want to call him Ditka so Bear it was.
14 yrs ago, Sumo Akebono got his name because before we even had him, I knew I was gonna name my bulldog Sumo. Right after we got him we were watching sumo wrestling on tv and at that time, Akebono was the Grand Yokozuna. I loved the name Akebono so that became his middle name.
12 yrs ago, Libby's registered name was Reno's Lady Liberty. She was born on the forth of July, so it was fitting.

Otis
I have ALWAYS wanted a bulldog..and I loved the name Otis for a bulldog. It just seemed fitting to me for some reason, so when it came time I could actually get my dream dog I had picked out his name years before! Which is a little weird now that I think of it. But it is pretty normal for people to ask his name and laugh after I tell them his name is Otis, so I think it suites him well I think!

So Kilmore was either going to be Kilmore (DJ in Incubus) or Chester (Singer in Linkin Park). He looked more like a Kilmore to us, so that is how he got his name. I have yet to met another Kilmore. He was a great piggy (our nickname for him)!
Winnie was a little tougher to come up with a name, but my love for Winnie the Pooh held out and she was named after a bear. :) All though she wasn't a fan of honey, but she sure loved her sleep. She was a great baby girl!
We had never had two puppies at the sametime before. With two we each got to name one, but the other had a say on if it was a keeper. I was told no french names, since they were frenchies. :(
Oliver was who I got to name. I actually don't know why he is Oliver, but that was the name I thought of when I looked at him.
Rocco was my husbands to name and I don't know why he was Rocco. It's wierd with the latest additions the names just came to us. Plus neither one of us had issues with the others pick. They both fit their names. Oliver is a clown and you can't help but laugh at what he does sometimes and Rocco is so serious, and bulldog stubborn.

So the next day when we got dozer his toys, we hadn't named him yet.. we bought EVERYTHING... Whe n i got home with a bunch of toys i put them in a big pile. he immediately went for the big ball that was twice his size, he ran so fast and so hard at the ball that he tripped over it and tumbled into the wall and the other toys with it, that he got up shook it off like it was nothing and kept moving!. richy looked at me and was like " hes like a damn bulldozer!." and i went holy crap!!!!!! DOZER!. his name is DOZER!!!!... so thats how we got his name,, and it couldnt have been anymore perfect!!!!.... his nickname is SHMOPEY. ( that came from me speaking faster then i think, and i was telling a friend how he used to me SHY and MOPEY.. but some how combined the word as it was coming out and we got SHMOPEY!.. haha
As for Harley... she got her name, because richy wants a Harley Davidson really bad, and my favorite comic book character is Harlequin ( the Jokers GF). so we decided on that!. my mom kept the name and calls her HA-HA for short cause shes always making her laugh!!!!

Hanna has always been Hanna
I guess I technically didn't name her. Hanna was her litter name. When the breeder would send me pictures I would think of her as Hanna. So by the time I picked her up, that cute little polka dot nose didn't look right on any other name.
So it's true, I'm guilty of not changing her name.
Hanna is the anti-Gizmo.
awww...sweet!glad you kept
awww...sweet!glad you kept her name!
How Farley got his name...
He came to us from the breeder as Mister Bojangles. We thought about calling him Bo or Jangles but neither really fit him. We then thought about calling him Henry Blake after the USCG Cutter, but it was not good either. He had a little skin rash and I had to put a baby t-shirt on him, of course it was tight and my husband kept singing "Fat Man in a little coat" .....soo.... we named him Farley after the late Chris Farley.
His "fancy" name is Mister Farley Blake.

Rugby is Late to the Party...
but we just got back from vacation and how could I possibly not post about this topic!
Rugby's name came to exist three years before HE actually did! Mike and I used to instant message when we didn't live together (holding the phone was too tedious for us, ahhh modern dating) and as I have been obsessed with Bulldogs forever we were trying to determine THE perfect name. We were throwing some around and all of a sudden it just hit me: RUGBY. The minute I typed the name to Mike his response was "that's it!". So for three years we talked about Rugby like he was actually with us (and people thought I was INSANE), and when I finally saw my little man, I knew it was perfect (and also fits with his English heritage). People absolutely love the name :-)
Scary thing is that we already have a second name picked out... Puckleby. We are huge hockey fans but still wanted to have that English flair, sooo hopefully one day we will be able to use it!
Love it!
Rugby is a great name! We are a soccer Family....
well, Petunia isn't her full name..
We have three kids, all of which didn't like our original name suggestion of 'Velma" (because the pups was so ugly she's cute!) So, our 15 year old girl liked "Leia", to go with our other dog (Chewie). Our 13 year old boy liked 'Tuna'. because he's just weird. And out little 8 year old liked 'snazzy', because she hasn't had a little dog before and it was 'the cutest little snorting thing EVER!'. So after much debate, we decide to combine them all and came up with 'Princess Petunia von Snazzypants", which has become 'tuna' for short...
