Dear all,
Our 15 yr old kelpie Gabby has finally crossed the rainbow bridge a few days ago... All of you were right, she did tell us it was time, when she didn't want to even pick up her head to eat anymore. The vet found an enlarged liver and splien about 2 months ago, then she pinched a nerve in her spine, then she was actually improving enough for us to consider a wheelchair.. then for the last two weeks , she seemed to get weaker and lose more weight with every passing day. I hate it when old dogs get old, time seems to pass by so much quicker when they are on their way down hill. She went from 65 pounds in her prime to 39 pounds in her final days. We definitely made her last couple of months a special as possible, even with us her carrying her to the park just so she could enjoy the sunshine and a change of scenery every other day. Her best friend bully, Kibby was with her and gave her kisses at the end, but I am not even sure if Kibby realized that Gabby was really gone. Kibby does not know life without Gabby, so she has become a little unsure and timid right now. I think she is still wondering when will be picking up Gabby from the vet. We are giving her alot of extra love and Hopefully she will snap out of it, if not, I am considering trying to get her a new friend. I still love old dogs the most and would adopt another senior without a doubt. Thank you to everyone for your support for these last few months.
Our sweetest Gabby (Gadsby) aka golden girl, brown deer, oh dear!, old deer, basenjiX (thats what one of her vet records said!) kibbys mommy.- born on 10/23/96- 11/10/11- grew up in Oakland Ca, with sister Kibby and other sister basset hound Angel. Their original mommy passed away and we adopted and moved them to San Leandro on 1/14/2007. As much as we tried to keep the family together, sister angels foster mom would not give her up! Kibby and Gabby made themselves at home as soon as they stepped thru the door. Gabby loved lying on beds, couches, grass, and any soft surfaces. She loved smelling anything new, escpecially the funky seaweed on the beaches of carmel. She loved eating turkey, corned beef, rotiserie chicken, ox tail soup, cheese, roast beef, anything delicious, she ate these things up until and even at the vets office until it was time. She probably had about a pound total of these foods because I wanted her last meal to be special, so if we didnt put her down, she might have died from a heart attack anyways! She loved going for long, endless walks, off leash, she loved getting attention by complete strangers. Most of all she loved Kibby, her baby, who she let walk all over her, and always push her out of the way for love and attention. Gabby was always in Kibbys shadow (really, she was the wind beneath her wings!), but she didnt mind. Even with Kibby's friendly bullying, Gabby always was patient and protective, and licked and kissed Kibbys face everyday. We will all miss Gabby so much. we feel hollow without her, we hope this pain will just slowly dull with time.
sincerely, christine

I'm so sorry to hear that... I really loved your pics of Gabby and Kibby - they are such an odd physical match but they just worked.
You made Gabby's last years truly golden and helped her ease her way out of this world when she asked you too. You are great parents.
