Licking face?

I posted a few months ago about my bulldog having rough play habits, he is now 11 months and is much better. He no longer bites or nibbles the face/jowels of other dogs but now he licks it! He LOVES to kiss other dogs faces. Some dogs don't mind it, and some are just confused. I talked to our obedience class instructor yesterday about this and he said he it might be in his genetics since bulldogs used to get in the bulls faces. This is my first bulldog, I have no idea if that is true or not. I am just wondering is this a bulldog thing, a puppy thing, or just an Otis thing? He is very social, absolutely loves other dogs..he just comes on a little strong I think. He means well though..anyways just wondering if this is common or if anyone has experience with it. Thanks!!

I'd take a face licking from that face :) too cute!

Gizmo likes to lick, anything, everything.  If I get out of the shower, I have to be dressed head to toe, or she'll start licking that skin -

She licks the couch (leather)  she licks the bed , she licks everything

But I dont recall another dogs face. . . .

Licking

Maybull does not like getting in the faces of other dogs, but she likes to lick. I think it's a tension relieve. She licking is specific; her beds, some rugs and carpets (I think it's the texture) and David's feet. She doesn't like my feet.

I think you should discourage your bulldog from licking other dog's faces. As a puppy, dogs are tolerant but they may not stand this kind of behavior from a grown dog. It may also be an age thing and will fade as your dog gets older.

Depends on the dog

I doubt it has anything to do with genetics, and nothing to do with bull baiting.  Kohl is my only one that is a licker and he likes licking ears, which I do discourage.  My dogs don't mind it but I do, it's an annoying habit.  So I agree with Stephanie, I would discourage it, especially with other dogs.  Exchange a toy for the licking.

our mutt does this to james!

and the saliva can be an irritant, so maybe try to curb the licking.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies! I know the behavior is annoying and should be stopped..I am just not sure how to go about it other than reprimanding him. The other thing he does is when one dog is getting attention Otis throws himself at that dog in a playful (but obnoxious) way to try to get in on the action and get attention. That habit really bugs me! Hopefully things improve with the classes.
