Kippah Training update

This will be the third attempt to post this, we are having such bad winds (50-60mph) we are losing power and server over and over again.

Kippah finished her Advanced Training Class last night, which means she has taken 3 sets of classes, a total of 21 all together.  Each class is 6 weeks long, and she sat in on another class inbetween her Intermediate and her Advanced class because she misses it so much when she is not enrolled in one.

The Advanced class is based 100% around passing the CGC test.  So graduation night included a pre-test.  She passed 90%.....the little stinker insisted on laying down every chance she had during the class, but when it came to l"ay down and stay" she kept sitting up as I walked away....little poop.  But we wont have a chance to do the actual test for another 6 weeks, so we are going to sit in with another Intermediate class because the trainer needs some examples, and Kippah LOVES to go to class.  In 4 weeks she will start another Advanced class and Kippah will sit in on that until we test in April.  By then the weather will be better and we can replace class with park visits.

A few of you asked about the CGC training and test, so I thought I would include the test check list for you:

Accepting a Friendly Stranger...stranger approaces and speaks to handler, shakes hand, does not touch dog.  Dog must stay sitting next to owner and not bark or be overly excited.

Sitting Politely for Petting, Friendly stranger greets owner, asks to pet dog, pets and walks away.  Dog must not show shyness or anxiety or over excitement

Appearance and Grooming.  dog will welcome being groomed or looked over by a vet.  Evaluator inspects dog coat, ears, teeth, tail, paws.

Out for a Walk. handler is in control of the dog, dog walks on one side only, with right turns, left turn, and about turn with one stop in between and at end, dog will sit when handler stops.

Walking Through a Crowd. demonstrats that the dog can move politely through pedestrian traffic, dog may show some interst without appearing overexuberant, shy or resentful.

Sit and Down on Commands, Staying in Place, Dig responds to handlers comman to sit and down, and will remain in place.  handler walks to end of a 20 foot line and returns, Handler may choose to leae the dog in sit or down for the stay. (HMMMM actually then she DID pass, she would sit but not down....either way she still needs practice)

Coming When Called.  Dot on 20 foot line from previous test, handler walks away from dog, turns and faces dog, calls and dog comes without stopping for anything

Reaction To Another Dog, The test demonstrates the dog can behave politely around other dogs, Two handlers and theri dogs approach, shake hands, lite conversation and move on, Dogs should show no more than a casual interest in each other.

Reaction to Distractions.  Dog is confident at all times when faces with common distractions, Dog may show casual interest, but on panic, or aggressiveness or bark...items such as walkers, wheelchairs, vaccumm cleaners etc

Supervised Separation.  Dog can be left with a trusted person and will maintain its good manners, Dog will be on a 6 foot leash, held be the evaluatior while the handler is out of sight for 3 minutes.

I cannot suggest training classes enough!  At least the first two, but I would highly suggest going through Advanced training and getting to a point at least close to being able to pass the CGC.  It has been SO worth the investment!

How old was Kippah when you

How old was Kippah when you entered her in to her first training session? I am actually very interested in entering in Tiny to some type of raining because I honestly think she does the complete opposite of everything you listed haha .. Tiny is an amazing puppy but man she is just hyper all the freaking time! Tiny is 4 1/2 months old now, any suggestions on when to start bringing her to a training course?

as soon as she has her basic vaccinations,

even before rabies, unless it is required by the class. Puppy Kindergarten can start at 3 months.

12 weeks min

They have to be 12 weeks old minimum and up to date on shots of course.  That is when she started and she will be 8 months old next week, and is the youngest that they have had finish the 3rd class.  We are waiting to take our CGC test because she really is young and I know she can do better.

We had ours done at Petsmart, and they do the classes in 6 week spurts, and you can usually do back to back classes with maybe just a week or two of down time.  If Tiny is hyper this structured class may be just what she needs to funnel some of that energy into a focused obiedience.  But I really suggest that you check out your trainer, watch them in class, talk to their students.  We are very lucky to have a great trainer with a great reputation.  But just as Dogs are only as good as their owners, Classes are only as good as their trainers.

At 4 1/2 I would think she is at a perfect age to get started with the puppy or Beginers class.  That will teach walking properly on a leash, sitting, watching you for commands.  It all has to be about positive reinforcement, starting with treats and the easing off of those.  SOME trainers will train them without you and then hand over your dog 'all trained'  I would stay away from this, cannot be good in my opinion!

Kippah is doing well -

and you must be a decent trainer too!

I love taking my dogs thru obedience classes. Not so much that I expect them to be 'Obedience' dogs, but it is fun, they enjoy it and best of all - they are usually the best students in the class!

One of the things the basic class I take does is 'Puppy Push-ups' which is a sit, a down and then a stand. At the last class the instructors have contests and one of them is 'How many Puppy Push-up can your dog do in a minute?' My Bulldog usually wins, or is a close 2nd. They usually win the 'longest down stay' too.

Several of my dogs have passed their CGC, but I've slacked off with the last few pups. The CGC is a great tool for evaluating a dog's basic obedience skills.

YAY Kippa!

This is just how I started out with Stoney and he loved it so much we just kept signing up.  Now we are doing Obedience Trials and he still loves it.

Ive been thinking about

Ive been thinking about putting molly through some obedience classes. She's good with a lot of situations but could def work on some things. She's already 8 months now so too old for puppy kindergarten. What would you suggest?

They (at Petsmart) has a

They (at Petsmart) has a Puppy or Beginers class, When she was in her first class we had dogs as old as a year in there, they all fit in just fine. You can talk to the trainer and see if she needs that Beginers class or if she should move on to Intermediate.

At 8 months old they are getting pretty strong.....Kippah can pull me off the porch steps if I allow her to.  I would suggest getting into some time of class just to give you the skills to work with her, and to give her the socialization and structure to learn how she is suppose to behave to keep her safe and well behaved and to keep you happy as well

Good for Kippah!

We're all very proud of you, little girl.  Now, if you eat kale, you'll get even bigger and stronger and be able to pass courses in a single bound.  I'm just sayin'...
