I took Sadie to a local vet today for the first time instead of driving 40 miles to the regular. She has an ear infection. First thing he addressed was feeding raw. He tried to give me a lecture on there are proven studies that raw damages the liver. Ok, Sadie is 12 1/2 yrs old, she's been eating raw for 5 yrs and she gets complete blood panels done every 6 mo. I just told him, "I must be doing something right she's 12 1/2 and her overall health is good."
Well first I would have asked
him to provide you with the written studies and the number of subjects tested in those studies. Then I would have asked him to provide you with studies that showed that dogs fed kibble in comparison were halthier. I would have also brought up mass amounts of daily dog food and dog treat recalls. Reminding of the deaths of those dogs poisioned by tainted dog food.
Then I would have asked him what he recommended as a proper diet. When he responded with something like Science Diet, I would have asked him what he feels is a proper diet for his family. Then I would have asked him if he felt that prepackaged foods were the most nutritional diet humans could eat .... OR if he felt that fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, poultry, fish as nature made it, not in a box was better nutrional value.
You have to fight the fight with common sense. Hamburger Helper or fresh organic, pasture raised beef ?
Then I would continue to make the 40 minute drive to your vet who I assume doesn't hassle you about a raw diet.
The way I feel is
I'm not going to pay a vet and educate him /her too........I can spend that money on good meats...........but gas costs too.

Mean people still suck
You would think a vet would feel pretty stupid
lecturing a client who has a healthy 12 1/2 year old dog. Seems to me that you are doing what is right for your dog, good for you.

Raw damages the liver!?! That's priceless!
I agree with Deb, I'd challenge him for the studies.
Don't worry about it, you know it's working for your dog!
Cathy and Audrey
clearly you are doing

the vet sounds about as ignorant as the vet(who is also a professor)
operated on my archie...sweetie i say continue w/the 40 min. drive
