Jake is Under the Weather :(

Strange, last 72 hours with Jake.  Thursday, he was a bit moody and decided it was the right time to chew up his bed.  He broke it open and was able to get a bit of stuffing out.  As I discovered him with a mouthful of the stuffing, which reminded me of him eating Cotton Candy, I thought I got it all from him. As the night grew old and it was time for him to go to bed, we put him in his crate.  We woke up the next morning to find he had eaten a small strip of his blanket in the crate.  Today, he threw up four times about an hour after breakfast.  We took him to the emergency vet and they did a stomach xray of him.  It was clear, except for a large amount of food.  This afternoon he has thrown up twice.  The vet told me that he shouldn't eat or drink anything until the morning and hopefully whatever he has gotten into will pass.  I am a bit confused as to where to go next?  He eats Nature's Promise Food and has really been doing well until this whole fiasco.  My vet is in the same practice as the Emergency Vet is.  Anyone have any advice?  I really don't want to start the whole chicken and rice detail again, it took him too long to get back on track after his initial stomach issue.  Just a bit frustrated............

I would watch him very closely...

I don't think xrays would show something soft like cotton or material and it's always possible it can cause a blockage.   Has any of it come out in his vomit or has he pooped anything out?  Usually the signs of a blockage are not wanting to eat and vomiting.  Is he hungry even though you're not feeding him?

He has passed several pieces

He has passed several pieces of his blanket in his vomit.  He also has the desire to eat, but has been in a deep sleep for the last two hours.  He appears to be very lothargic.  I am worried about him.  Hopefully, tomorrow will bring better news.  Thanks for your concern and tips.

Also...

Both vomiting and lethargy are symptoms of a blockage. Just saying....

May just be a little

stomach virus, it happens from time to time. But if things don't get better by tomorrow morning by all means have him checked out again. Changing his food may not be the answer at this point since he has been on the same one for a period of time. Sorry but I am no expert but I have owned two bulldogs and have gone through this type of problem myself, but I just can't help but be concerned for Jake. Hope things turn out better in the morning !

He will need more than X-rays to see if he has a blockage.

I would suggest you get your vet to do an ultrasound to check for a blockage. An X-ray isnt enough to diagnose a blockage if there is one present. I would not wait and watch, but take him on in tomorrow if possible and suggest they do more than an X-ray...

Best of luck, and please let us know how he is doing!

our Ms Holly had eaten somethings she shouldn't

several months ago...they x-rayed and found nothing but when they did her blood work her liver levels where very high...she had to stay at the vets for several days with IV's and medication for her liver...finally after about 4 days her liver levels where going down...I am not sure what she ate if it was a piece of her bed, or something in the yard... she recovered... have some blood work done and check the liver levels..

Jake Update

Well, the last 24 hours have been a world wind with our little buddy.  Last night, he vomitted two more times, this time we were actually able to see some of his blanket.  He went to sleep on the couch with us and there were no other episodes of illness.  This morning, he woke up and went out and passed a large piece of the blanket the other way.  He came in and ate like a savage a small amount of his food and water.  We didn't give him his usual amount.  Since then, he has curled up on his bed and has been snoring away.  He appears a bit more skiddish than usual and is not his usual self.  I am giving him until noon today to see his status.  I will let everyone know.  Thanks so much for your concern and assistance.

That's better news:-)

Hopefully he has passed whatever was cUsing the most problem. Keep us posted.

Latest Jake Update

First and foremost, thanks to all for your help and concern about Jake!  He is starting to come around.  About an hour ago, we went for a walk.  He did a Pit Stop and what he left, although not ideal, appeared to be whatever was left of his blanket.  He came in and I gave him a handful of his food and some limited water.   He attacked the food and water!  He no sooner went to his bed got a toy and brought it to me to play with him.  He is now in his bed chewing a big Nyla-Bone.  Well, after using a "sick day" today to babysit him, its good to see some improvement.  Valuable lesson learned.  No more blankets in his crate!  Thanks again everyone!

Glad to hear he's doing better today...

I owe every gray hair I have to my bulldogs and I'm sure many others do too!  I've had a lot of experience with blockages with my sister's Springer, she eats everything!  They have pulled everything from pieces of the backyard trampoline to her daughter's unmentionables from that dogs stomach.

A Tough 48 Hours

Well, I can the last 48 hours have been tough.  However, Jake is fine now. He has passed everything he ingested and we learded a valuable lesson.  He will be in his crate without a blanket for quite a while.   He is back to being full of energy and causing mischief like all four month old puppies do!  Thanks to everyone who gave me some advice on what to do with him over the last 48 hours.  He has definitely caused us some gray hairs!  Thanks again!!!!

A good lesson for your vet though...

that some things don't show up on regular xrays!

Thanks

Thanks again to all of you for including Jake in your thoughts.  He is back to 100%.  No more blanket in his crate and is doing all his Puppy Tricks again! He is back to his normal self, pushing all the buttons he can!  Thanks again, this was not a good time for us, but it is behind us now!  A Lesson Learned!
