Introducing a Chinese Shar-Pei???

Hi everybody,

Well, we've had Raleigh for almost 3 months now and she's doing extremely well in our house.  We could not be happier with her and she is great with other dogs (especially other Bulldogs, Pugs, and Pit Bulls).  Anyway, before we got Raleigh, we thought we were going to adopt a dog, and felt bad when we ended up getting Raleigh from a breeder instead of adopting her, so we've been looking to adopt a dog for about a month now once again and found the most gorgeous Chinese Shar-Pei.  I was just curious if any of you have had any experiences with either breed as I don't want to introduce Raleigh to another dog who she won't love.  Also, any tips on introducing a new dog to the house would be appreciated.  We're probably not going to be able to make a decision fast enough to get her (and probably will stick with just Raleigh, as the rest of my family is not convinced), but this would be helpful for future reference (and for building my case for getting another dog, lol)... anyway, here's some photos of the Shar-Pei. :)

wow!!!!

Holy Moly that Shar-Pei is stunning!!!!

No help on the introducing part but I wanted to say how beautiful the dog is....I always wanted two....I had names picked out and everything!

My indirect experience with shar-peis

First of all, I think they're beautiful too.

A woman I knew in my hometown had two of them, a fawn and a black.  Niether of them was very friendly at all.  Not aggressive or anything, just really cold.  And they are very territorial and "one owner" kind of dogs, according to her.  So don't really take to other people apart from their owners.  Don't know about other dogs though.

This experience with them kind of cooled me towards them in terms of ever owning one.

Of course, I'm into goofy, silly, fun loving dogs who thrive on attention  :)

I have had the same experience with them.

They are rather cold and aloof dogs, and they are territorial and can be aggressive.

But I LOVE Raleigh! What a beautiful baby:-)

My experience

I always wanted two as well....funny so many people have that on their wish list, not a Shar Pei, but TWO Shar Peis..

Anyway, about 5 years ago we came across a breeder that we knew that was finally going to have two available.  So we got a chocolate boy, and a black girl,  The boy looked ALOT like this one!  About 6 weeks later I knew I had made a mistake and we gave the black girl to a friend who had always wanted one.  They still have her, she has been in MANY fights with their lab, she is very territorial.  I had the boy for about 2 years, he became extremely territorial.  He would stand in my doorway and not let anyone into my bedroom.  I talked to a Shar Pei rescue and this is very common, we found a home for him with a single, retired Marine, and every Christmas I get a card from them, they are doing well...he rarely has anyone in his house, and never any other pets---this works well for Tai (the male)

They have skin issues, I think far worse than Bulldogs...possibly because they are more active and more sweat and dirt and such gets in the wrinkles.

Sorry I dont have a more positive spin on it, but I would think it would be best as a single dog, and maybe even a singe household..or extreme training from the get go in order to establish Alpha status before they do

someone who i had met through

someone who i had met through walking my archie had one...apparently the dog was extremely territorial

and no person vcould pass by w/out being attacked...had even bitten kids...still i think they're adorable

w/all those wrinkles but bully is my breed for sure!

I would pass

This breed has a very different disposition and I personally would never own one.  Of the people I have known that have had them they would not get another.  Most were not good with other dogs, extremely possessive and fighters and could not be trusted with people outside of the family.  One was a bad biter.  Odd non-warming personalities.

What I will say about bulldog bitches is they are usually sweet, sweet until they get past their first heat cycle and on to a year old.  Then watch out the beotch can come out, LOL.  They are not always the best with other girls, so I would highly recommend you get the opposite sex if you do decide to add to your family.

I completely agree with you on this.

This breed belongs to single dog families only.

similar experiences as others

My parent's neighbors moved in to their home when I was about 10, they had a 5 year old Shar Pei that came with them (as well as 3 young daughters...at the time they moved I think the girls were 6, 5 and 18 mos).  As a kid who loved dogs I was PUMPED (we didn't have a dog at the time so I was looking for a new buddy).

Simply put...that dog was aggressive.  She did everything within her power to GET YOU and attack you (she would go bonkers if you were in the house and she was outside and realized someone not in the family was inside).  She somehow managed to get out of their backyard and during the 2 hours she was out (the family was searching for her the entire time) she ended up biting an animal control officer.  I'm not sure how the neighbors saved her life (our city has a zero tolerance policy on aggressive dogs with a history of biting people)...but she was labled a "menace" dog and they were told if she ever got out again she would not receive another chance (bites or not).

I'm not trying to "brand a breed" but I did want to share my experience as well.

Thanks for verifying ;)

So thanks for verifying that a Shar-Pei would be a good choice, LOL.  Well, anyway, thanks for the advice and even though she seemed friendly in person, I really don't want to deal with an agressive dog in the long run.  Seriously, thanks for sharing your experiences and sparing me issues in the future.  I truly do appreciate it.  My wife and kids really like Basset Hounds... does anyone have any experiences with them?  Hopefully these experiences will be slightly more positive, haha :)

Much Better Choice

with a Basset Hound.  If would not hesitate to get a basset.  Wonderful breed.

AmyandSophia's picture

I love Bassets!

I grew up around a few of them in my neighborhood. The only negative was that their ears can get viscious infections if not cleaned and cared for daily or every other day. Other than that, I love them:-)

Why not adopt a bulldog?

There's lots of bulldogs that are in need of rescue.

Raleigh the Bulldog's picture

Well...

Well, this is certainly something that we've considered; it's just that with all of the health problems Bulldogs are prone to, we're not sure we can afford to keep two in the house right now. Believe me, though, it's something we've thought about a lot.

true!but here in montreal

true!but here in montreal they are not as common to find and i went to adopt

a female a few months ago...geez it's easier to adopt a child i tell you,lol

but glad they vigorously check and evaluate...not everybody should be a

 pet owner!!!

Basset and English Bulldog

now THAT couple would be a hoot!  I can see it now!

My close friend has a basset, he has had them all his life, this last one I found at a rescue for him.  They are sweet, and loyal.  They just want to please you, and they dont seem to be territorial.

Basset+ Bully= Best Xmas card ever! As for the Shar...

That is a very popular breed ot here.  Health problems just like I have with James, often worse (wrinkles, eyes, hips, allergies, etc)  If you are going to go for it, prepare for the investment!  Not just the $$ but the time and heart ache too.

DOes he/she have other homes waiting?  If yo are his only home, how do you refuse.

Thanks...

Thanks!  Well, she has other people who are very interested (and rightfully so; she is beautiful), and I'm not 100% sold on the breed, so I think I'm going to have to pass and look into finding a Basset :)

Bassets are great dogs!!

Had one named Chloe when I was younger.  Other than the ear infections and the hemotomas she would give herself shaking her head under the table she was AWESOME!

Céline and Angel Stella's picture

I have a friend who works with bassett rescue

She is in New Jersey, where are you located?  Maybe I could help hook you up?

She has two and they are great dogs.  Only thing - they can howl.  And boy, when they howl is it loud!!  But they don't do that all the time, of course.  :)

Deb and MacKenzie and Ester's picture

Let the Hounds Out .... Yep they do howl

Their howls crack me up, but then again I don't own one.

At the dog shows...when the national anthem is played (or sung) there always seems to be a few dogs that like to sing (howl) along.  Makes yah laugh everytime.

Or also referred to a "Bay" for the Hounds

Wow! I guess I had the best Shar Pei ever! She was nothing

like that. I also had a samoyed, and when he died had a little dog that was dropped off, and Matilda, my shar pei was fine with both of them. She was a great watch dog, and loved everyone! I lost custody of her when I left the a-hole, and he never fed her right the vet said she had the worst intentines he'd ever seen, my stupid ex-boyfriend was feeding her ppl food, like pizza and wings and CRAP! He ended up putting her down.

dont do it!

sharpeis are mean and eat children! just kidding... any dog, any breed ,personality will just depends on how the last owner treated and trained them.. however, i do think that the energy and personality traits between the breeds are very different.  These were bred as protecting , fighting dogs! and unfortunately if they werent trained right from the get go, they tend to snap.

i just rescued a beagle and didnt do my research first and holy cow!! she can hooowwwllll at any cat, small fast moving object. our neighbors think someone is being murdered on the streets every time she sees a cat! it is really that bad. like night and day! so loud she makes my bully drop her toy while we are walking... but indoors, copper beagle is the sweeetest most loving thing in the world. just read the descriptions.. there are some beagles that dont howl or chase cats! they are the perfect size for eachother, and they cuddle together too.

I really like mutts too, they have so many less problems.... better yet, any breed, just as long as they are senior! they are the best! look for an older dog if you can.. they need you!! i like cattle dogs.. or i always wondered about frenchies too.
