Interesting video of soft palate resection being done on a bulldog

I know lots of us, including me, don't really know what is involved in the surgical procedure to resection an elongated soft palate. Junior had this done last year at the age of 10 and it made a world of difference for him.
There is always risk putting a dog under for surgery and I would never put a 10 year old through it unless it is absolutely necessary. For Junior, it was and we were fortunate that his surgery was successful and he had no complications during recovery.
If you think your dog might need a palate resection it is VERY important to find a surgeon who has done lots of them. I also believe it is important to find a surgeon who uses a laser for the procedure.

Here is a video of the procedure being done with a laser on a bulldog.

Silly question

For my future reference, how would you know if this is something your bulldog needs?

not a silly question at all

a dog needing a soft palate resection would have symptoms. Loud noisy breathing when the dog gets excited is usually a good clue they need it. My Junior was a very loud snorer and you could hear a flapping noise when would breathe through his mouth. When it got worse he was reverse sneezing a lot and he would gag on his kibble. Softening his food with water helped. I would have done it sooner but my husband was afraid he might not make it through the surgery.

    Great video

Wonder if by the amount taken off this dog was considered to have a long, or a very long soft palete? What I'm asking is; was the amount a little or a lot?

    Good Question

I would be interested in knowing that as well.  My first inpression would be that it wasn't a lot.  My vet has mentioned that thickness is a bigger concern then length because you can't make it thinner.

This is amazing! I had no idea laser surgery would cauterize

and stop bleeding.  I always wondered how this worked because I feel that we will eventually need take Fatboy in for this surgery.  I worried about the healing process and what not.  Thanks for posting!
