I didn't post about this last week, but Meaty had his SECOND time of being stung by something (?) --we assume it was an insect....
could've been a sudden reaction to something ELSE outside? ANYHOO, his sweet face was swelling, his jowls were getting wayy
too pink, so I gave him 50mg of Benadryl, and thank GOODNESS it was during vet hours and we have a vet a mile and a half away!!!
(his regular vet is NOT that close to us, but in an emergency....who cares!) I admit I was VERY scared, and to me, his breathing
was JUST starting to sound just a *bit* labored.....hubby says his breathing was fine....but anyhooo.....
.....
.....
By the time I called, etc. and we were putting on his harness, about 15 minutes had passed since I first discovered this...it
was getting worse......even one of his eyes was almost SHUT from the swelling!!! **SCARY!** Well, he got his injection of
Dexamethasone (just like last time), and the vet was SO glad that I knew to give the 2 Benadryl,...all I can say is. I think
vets should teach people to ALWAYS have it on hand!!!! I read TONS and TONS of books about bullies before we got
Meaty, and I'm sure I never read about this!
.....
......
Yesterday at his REGULAR vet, I wanted to mention what had happened, just so he'd know.....SO glad I did, because then
he tells me they have "Bully Allergy Kits".....!!!! I was astounded that they'd never mentioned this to me before!!! THEN he tells
me they lost one of their bullies (this vet and his wife have several bullies, they also breed and show bullies, too) .
from a centipede sting, and it happened very quickly.....So, the
kit includes a whole bunch of Benadryl, but more importantly, a syringe with Dexamethasone in it. I'm THRILLED to have
this, because if it were after-hours when this happened and the Benadryl didn't kick in enough, our closest 24-hour
vet is 25 minutes away!!
........
........
The part where I said "I KNOW you all will agree with me"......or, maybe it's my mild OCD, (plus, I'm a nurse), but it
BUGS me that the syringe isn't labeled, that I didn't SEE the person who drew it up, that I didn't SEE the vial of
Dexamethasone, and also VERY important----when does it EXPIRE??? So I ask the receptionist about when it
expires, she asked the vet, and he said about a year and a half.....Welllll, hubby and I agree we are going
to replace it in a year (maybe less!) I have heard HORROR stories of humans who needed their epi-pen
in an emergency, but the epi-pen had expired.
.....
....
SORRY THIS IS SO LONG!!! LOL! :-) **IF** you actually got through my epic "novel" and your eyes aren't totally
blurred yet---I would LOVE to know if:
1) does your vet offer this kit?
2) I noticed the invoice said "BULLDOG allergy kit"......of course we all know bullies (and pugs, etc.) are more
vulernable due to their brachycephalic wittle faces, tracheal issues, etc....but aren't ALL doggies at serious
risk of this? Maybe it said "BULLDOG" because they sell them for ALL the breeds and label them as such
and this particular
Dosage of Dexamethasone was specifically for an average-sized bully?
3) Has this facial swelling ever happened to your bullies (or any of your pets---cats, too?) and what did you do?
Just curious if the Benadryl was enough?
Thanks for your input! Gee, this kind of thing makes you never want them to go outside! If it's not the heat, now
it's his SECOND time being stung.....soooo grateful to the Dear Lord that my Meaty is okayyyy!!!!

so glad Meaty's okay!
How scary! My bullies have never had such a severe allergic reaction or facial swelling like poor Meaty. Sorry I can't answer your questions but am so glad Meaty's doing okay :
On a FUN note, met a bully yesterday with MY name, and
I have NEVER heard of *any* doggie with my name, AND she was a bully, AND she looked JUST LIKE Sophie!!!
Her name was Victoria.....the owner told me, "well, her REAL name on her PAPERS is Victoria, but we call her "Sister"...
which was also cute. Hee hee, wouldn't it be FUNNY if that "OWNER" turned out to be a member here! :-)
sooo, anyone here heard of ANY doggie named Victoria??? :-)

never seen a bullie emergency kit,
but I will look for one now ! I'm glad the big guy is ok ! Good call w/ the Benedryl and the vet !
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
No, but I am going to ask
Ozzy got stung by something when we first move into the new house--and it is scary. On the benedryl how much do you give for a 55lb bully??
So glad that Meaty is going to be OK.
Lyn
Lyn, the dosage is 1 mg. per pound, so Ozzy would get TWO! And.
it's funny, (well, not really!), but since Meaty weighs in the mid-eighties, it made me wonder if THREE would've been better, since
the dosage is 1 mg. per pound....I keep meaning to ask our vet! It would seem VERY scary, since the highest dose for HUMANS
is two at a time! Then again, I know they aren't human, so maybe Meaty could've had THREE? (Kinda like how they say giving
a dog a little piece of cheeze is the equivalent of like a gazillion calories compared to a human.... )

i carry a epi pen for wilson......
thats how stgrong of a an reaction he can get....he got bite by a spider and my vet is 45 mins away and by the time i got their he had stopped breathing...we were lucky and he made it...and the vet gave me a prescription for a epi pen...i always carry it with me...
thank goodness verything went well for you...i know how scred you were after going thru this my self.......
That's how we found her....
around 2:30 AM. Her and her sister sleep in a crate and have since the day we brought them home. They are quiet at night and know when it's bed time. I heard commotion and "wheazing" andgot up to investigate. Her face was swollen and she was gasping and literally foaming at the mouth. Thank goodness the emergency vet is only about 10 mins from our house. We wrapped her in a blanket, jumped in the car, and headed for the vet.
This pic is later in the day when the swelling started to go down. She obviously was rubbing her face frantically on her crate during the night. Lot's of bugs in Florida!
OMG!!! Poor, sweet baby!!! So glad she's okayyy!!! I saw
your post above and asked a question, but didn't know you had posted the story below.....oh, that pik makes me want to cry!!!
My hubby and I are soooo glad we were HOME when this happened.....too hard to think of the "what ifs"..!!!!!

oh WOW!!! Sooo glad Wilson was okay! How SCARY! I did
Wow, you must have FREAKED when he stopped breathing.....I can't imagine!!! ((( HUGS )))
Also, I did NOT know that animals could get epi.......wish I'd known that, because we actually HAVE an epi-pen already--we only have it
because my hubby was on allergy shots and it was for "just in case" situations.....) ! I'll have to ask
my vet what the DOSE is for Meaty and Sophie! I may need to use the epi someday if BOTH of them are stung and
all i have is the one syringe of dexamethasone! :-(

Experienced this...
many times with Karma. We had one spring where it was happening almost every other day for a couple weeks. We figured out that it was from grass fertilizer that was used outside of their yard, just a little blowing in must have been causing it. We took him to the dermatologist and he put him on hydroxizine 2x daily. Our regular vet did supply me with 2 syringes, 1 with benadryl and 1 with epinephrine. Luckily we never had to use it.
What an excellent idea though, the emergency kit. I'm going to ask my vet for that for Violet & Magic. I'm so glad Meaty is OK, I know how scary that is!
This is freaking me out!
I just recently noticed that we had something in the basement wasn't sure what it was until I googled it and YEP they are centipedes. I have benadryl on hand but will look into the syringe. Its so weird you posted this now after I just found out what it was. :(
oh, I'm sowwy I freaked you out, but glad that you will
now get some epi or dexamethasone...!! Yea, when my vet told me, and it was his wife's FAVORITE doggie, I just wanted to cry.......

Happened to Audrey too!
She got stung by something, now we think it was a wasp. At the time I didn't know what it was, I thought it was the strawberries she ate. She stared INSANELY itching her face, just going berserk scraping it on everything.
Within 10 minutes her face was so swollen her eyes were swollen shut and she was starting to really pant heavily. The ER vet is 30 mins away, I made it in 20 mins. I frantically called hubby, he was an hour away. He called the ER vet and told them we were on the way.
I had to carry her in, they met me at the door and rushed her back, later the ER Dr said she was one breath away from critical condition. She had to stay overnight, it was so awful!
Now I carry benadryl dissolving strips or tablets everywhere I go with her. Her throat was definitley swollen to the point she was really struggling to breathe, so I always make sure I get the kind that dissolves on the tongue so I don't have to worry about her being unable to swallow it.
Audrey in the hospital. Her face was still very swollen hours later and with IV meds...
