House training

Just got a new puppy he is 9 weeks old and I am a little comfused.  He is good during the day .  I have a crate for him  at night he goes in there with his bed in the back and I put newpaper down for him in the crate.  He crys about 12:30 at night but after he has gone.  He now knows he can go on the paper at night.  Shall I take the paper away or is he too yonge yet. I don't mind getting up for him through the night, but by the time I do he has gone on the paper.

When is his last meal?

Do you take him outside for pee before bedtime?

house Training

A puppy under six months of age cannot be expected to control his bladder for more than a few hours at a time (approximately one hour for each month of age.

I would set my alarm for 1/2 way through the night -

Take him out before going to bed, and make sure he does his business.   As previously stated, they can not hold themselves very long, so I would set an alarm to take him out in a few hours -

I personally never put papers in the kennel w/ the puppy, I always make the kennel smaller so that he couldnt do his business in one side and sleep in the other.

I agree with Rick no papers in the create :(

Maybe he will be incline to bark or cry to let you know he wants to go pee.
Good luck and let us know how things go with your new puppy :)

Just make sure he doenst have access to whole crate -

I always used one of those 'Life Stages' crates - with an adjustable divider - you give more room as the puppy grows - it prevents them from using 1 corner for a potty.

Good Luck, if the puppy stages are too much, bring him to Delaware, we'll take *cough* care of him, we *cough* promise *cough* to give him *cough* back after a year, *cough* or 10    LOL

Agree with the rest1. take

Agree with the rest

1. take the papers out of the crate, he shouldnt be encouraged to go in his crate wether its on the paper or not

2. at 9 weeks old hes going to need to be taken out atleast once during the night.  we were pretty deligent about this when oliver was 8-10 weeks, i think we went out every 3 hours or so.  after that we cut back to once a night for probably about a month before we trusted him to make it through the night.

Certainly sucks to wake up so much at night, we live in a third floor apartment, but they physically just cant hold it.  Good luck

Our little guy ...

We got our little guy when he was 8 weeks old.  We would make sure he went outside at about 10 pm and then get him up at 3:30 and he would go outside and then right back in his crate until about 7 am.  We (or should I say my awesome husband) did that until he was about 14 weeks, then moved our time to get him up at about 4:15 am and then finally my husband realized he was having to wake him up to take him outside so we let him sleep all night and so far no accidents in his crate at all.  We did also make the crate smaller so he didn't have room to go in his crate.  Only one time during that whole process did he ever bark to be let out to go, so I guess it worked!  Goodluck

At that age

We took Chef D out every 3-4 hours.   I would take him around 10-11, 2-3 then around 6.  With time the breaks got spread out.

He is 20 weeks now and can go 8 hours without needing a potty break (night only).  Some nights he will wake us for an overnight bathroom break, but they are few and far between these days.   Last night he actually went to sleep at 9 and didn't wake up until 7. Doggie daycare really wore him out.  It was nice getting to 'sleep in'.
