House traing going bad

Well we are going backward in our house training.  He was doing so well. Last night he peed and pooped in his crate.  He doesn`t give me any worning I let him out at 10:00, 2:00 and 5:30 at night.  I just put paper in his crate, no more towels , he pees on them.  I thought at 12 weeks he would start to get it.  He was good for 5 days and now we are back to square one.  I hope he catches on soon.  I think he is playing with my other bulldog so much that he is not associating or listing to me at all.  I will have to try harder I guess.

Remembering the Puppy days....

House training --   lets see what did we do that you are doing - waking up multiple times in the night to take them out - after feeding - they would go out (us standing there with them) until they would do a pee and a poo - LOTS of praise - we never encouraged pads or paper at all - always outside -

As others have stressed  ROUTINE is the key and being Consistant :)

Hang in there! keep on working :) sometimes they follow the older dogs behavior (and sometimes the older dog relapses into 'puppyhood')

:)

Potty Training

IMO the breeder can be your best asset when it comes to housetraining and if they have started the potty training at soon as te puppies start walking then it is so much easier.  If the puppy was raised in an environment (ie puppy pen, kennel) with no regard to where the puppy should potty then it is far more difficult.

So I would start by asking your breeder what type of training had they started (if any).  If the puppy was started on paper training then papers in the crate are telling that puppy it is ok to potty there.

What time at night are you feeding, are you feeding  3 or 4 times a day, how much?  Maybe you should try feeding a lighter meal in the evening, and limit the water at 7:00pm.  Is the puppy active during the day, is someone home with the puppy?

Is this puppy getting tired out before bed time?  Have you tried an evening walk?

12 weeks is very young to expect this puppy to be totally house trained.  It is part of the process when you decide on a puppy compaired to an older dog, that is housetrained.  They will have setback and accidents, it is normal.

You have to be consistent, and that means everyone in your house.  And you have to have PATIENCE!

Human babies wear diapers or they would be pooping on your floor too, or in their crib at night.  Some take much longer to potty train then others.

I know the breeder put paper

I know the breeder put paper down for him.  I don't know why he is  peeing on him bed.  I feel bad that I had to take it away from him . but he loves peeing on his bed and the other dogs bed.  I will be patient and keep trying. He is just a little boy.

He is still so young.

Honestly, Chef D didn't get it until he was about 16 weeks old.  Until then he would have about 1-2 accidents a day.  Sometimes more, sometimes days without any.  It was so furstrating.   I felt like failure.   Then about 4 months old it was like a switch went off.  Now he hardly has an accident.

Although he did this morning.  Totally my fault, I'm not feeling well and waited a little too long to take him out after breakfast.  At least he pooped in the bathroom, next to the toilet.  So it was easy to clean up.

I agree with no towel in the crate.  When Chef D was 12 weeks he always peed on a towel.  I think his breeder used towels because it was like a tigger for him.   He has grown out of that and now will lay on them like it's a blanket.

Good luck.  This to shall pass.

training

I know my breeder kept the babies on towels on top of warming blankets. So mine associate towels, blankets, dog beds etc as a place to pee! So, we don't have any dog beds, they just get trashed. They still will pee on a blanket or towel if it's on the floor and they are both over a year old. It does take a while to potty train puppies. My first was trained really easy, he lets you know when he has to go etc. The next 2 ( one is over a year, the newest is only 4 months old) don't and they will go  where ever, so I admit I use potty pads. They have no sense of holding it and it drives me crazy too.I try to remove them so they will just go outside, but with them not alerting me, they will go anywhere at anytime. I think I'm going to try the bell method, so they will ring it when they have to go. I hear it's easy to teach, so hopefully that will work. All you can do is praise them when they do go outside and eventually they will catch on.

Bed Peeing

is SO COMMON.  Either no bed, or you will be washing alot of blankets.  Mine have all peepeed their beds.  Bulldogs puppies are raised on soft cotton bedding, they need it to get up and walking.  Papers are slick so until they are able to walk well they are on soft bedding.  He still doesn't understand the difference.

I had a housefull that never had beds because they would pee on them.  Norbert, MacKenzie and Cleo never got beds.  Then after Cleo went to my sister and I got Ester I started to re-introduce pads in crates.  After Norbert passed then I started buying beds and I don't have any problems now.  One time I caught MacKenzie peeing on Kohl's bed, he got a BIG scolding and he's never tried it again.  So I have lots of beds around the house now and they all sleep in them and thankfully no peeing.

So sometimes it is a marking thing, not likely in a little puppy.  He is just confused.  He will get it over time.  If he doesn't he may not get to have a bed.  What I wouldn't do is let him on your bed...because I can almost guarantee you he will pee on it.

When Norbert was young, before a year old I had to keep my bedroom door closed, or he might pee on it. Happened a couple of times so he was banned from the bed.  Eventually he got to sleep with me.  I do remember one time we were on the boat moored in Victoria and he peed on our bed.  Not nice...I had to rush to the laudromat and wash the bedding.  Little bugger, he was like 6 yrs old then.

It may be a bulldog thing...I don't know, but it is annoying and sometimes you do alot of bed washing.

Chef D must be weird

He has peed on his bed exactly 4 times.   One was when he was about 10 weeks old and we left him in the crate too long, no where else to pee. We put the bed back in after washing and he never peed on it again.

The other times was when we tried to put in a new bed.   Around 14 weeks we got him a new bed because the other one was small. He peed on it the first time he used it.   Just thought it was an accident.   We put the old one back in while washing the new one.  No problems.

We were lazy and didn't put the bed back in the crate right away.   Around 16 weeks we tired the new bed again.  Same thing, he pissed on it.  Again we put the old one back in while we washed the new one.  No problems with the old one. This last time the bed never made it to the crate.  He just went over to it and pissed while it was on the floor.

I know they say dogs don't do things out of spite, but damn this dog does not like the new bed and pisses on it every single time we try to use it.

He's making it his own

that is what he is doing.  The old one already has his smell. enough to his satisfaction.  Do you have other dogs?

Cleo pees on the bathmat.  Really irritates my sisters bf.  He'll put the mat down, go into the shower, comeout and she has peed on the mat.  Just cracks me up.

It's so much work!!

but consistancy is the key - It's a lot of work making sure they go out enough, constantly watching them wherever they are in the house, but once they catch on you are in the home stretch!!!
