Housebreaking

I think it is counterproductive to teach your dog to potty in the house when you are trying to train them to potty outside.  They really don't understand the difference.

So I personally would not do such a thing.  Once your puppy is an adult they are able to hold it for 8-10 hours a day and they typically poop morning and night.

What I do with puppies is up to 6 months I make sure I get home at lunch time so they can go out to potty.  After that they should be able to not poop during the day.  They may still have a peepee accident.  For Kohl he was in an expen and I layered baby crib mattress covers (water proof) that I got at Target and then a doggie blanket.  He also had a crate in there as well as his Donut bed.  I got the fitted crib pads and cut off the stuff that wraps around the mattress.  Worked great!  He really had an accident after 6 months and never a poo accident.

PBI but it's a great alternative

for someone who lives on a 2nd floor apartment w/a patio though.  This is kind of my situation.  Not an apartment but we are on the 2nd floor and we can't let Fatboy roam around on the ground floor (too many ppl around to see him running free like that).

No but I plan on making one myself.

It's cheaper and doesn't look very hard.  I've already bought the universal drip pan (for a washer, around $35).  I just need the astro turf (I searched amazon) and the wiring to place inside (will probably buy from home depot or something).  Here's a link to what I saw:

I plan on placing puppy pee pads underneath the astroturf to get Fatboy interested in pee'ing on the potty patch but I won't know how well it works until the project is finished.  But if it doesn't, at least I know I didn't fork over $200 for something that will never get used again.

Thanks so much for posting that!

We've been meaning to make one for Stella, our 11 1/2 bully, who can't always keep it in anymore.  We're on a third floor and the trip outside involved a walk down a long hall, down the elevator and another long hall.  So, the poor thing is having a hard time sometimes.  She refuses to go just on the puppy pads so we've been meaning to build something with artificial grass.

Thanks - I've already sent the link to Stella's daddy!!!

Outdoor Patio

Yes .. I agree that training to use it outside on the patio makes sense, especially if you are in an upper floor apartment/condo.  But I can't imagine training one to use it indoors.  PU

How do you plan on keeping it from getting stinky?  I know there are enzyme products but I wonder how good they work.

My back yard is not landscaped yet and the doggies peepee right off the patio (except Kohl). It is dead pan and man did it get stinky in a few days.  Thankfully it is raining now and that washes away the smell.  Can't wait to get the yard landscaped, but unfortunately it has to wait until spring now.
