Hello just wanted to introduce myself

New to the forum. My baby boy Winston passed away just over a month ago. We have decided a house is not a home without a bulldog so I came here for tips on training a puppy, etc as it's been a long time. New puppy should be born early September and coming home with us sometime in October. In the meantime, here is our beloved Winston just 2 days before passing.

Welcome!

I'm so sorry for the loss of Winston...what a handsome boy.  How old was he?  I am fairly new to this website as well. I have two English bulldog puppies.  The girl Cupcake is 15 months old, and the boy Biscuit is 8 months old.  Biscuit was much harder to train.  I was still taking him out to pee every hour during the day and every three hours during the night from month two when I got him to month five, and he had no problem whatsoever peeing in his crate at night or on my carpet for the first few months I got him.  And Cupcake would never dream of peeing where she slept and probably only had one or two accidents in the house in her whole life .  So Biscuit was harder to train, it was like he wouldn't empty his bladder completely and would pee a little here, a little there, so maybe boys are harder?  Or perhaps it is strictly each dog is uniquely different and has nothing to do with gender...

As a mom of two puppy bulldogs, I'd say the most important thing I've learned is to BE CONSISTENT!  I consistently took Biscuit outside to use bathroom.  When he'd piss on my carpet, I'd immediately catch him, pick him up, and bring him outside and say, "THIS is where we pee."  And he'd look around confused like, well that's great Mom but I don't have to pee anymore.  But after several times of this, he seemed to realize that I can pee on the carpet or I can pee in the grass, either way Mom's going to make me go outside, so I might as well just hold it till I get outside.  And look for the signs.... I can always tell when Biscuit has to go to the bathroom, he gets nervous and starts pacing and smelling the carpet.  So I'd pick him up and say "Let's go outside!"  So look for your puppy's cues.  The housebreaking part is definitely the hardest and I thought I'd never get him trained, but now at 8 months he never has accidents and can hold it 6 hours during the day and 8 hours at night.

Oh yeah...and the chewing.  Grrr.  Have plenty of chew toys out because they love to chew.  Although I hear they never outgrow this.

So it's going to be like having a newborn baby for the first few months.  A lot of work but oh so rewarding. Take lots of pictures because they grow up way too fast. By four or five months they the whole peeing everywhere nightmare thing starts to dwindle...

Although with your Winston you really have so much more experience than I do... But in case you've forgotten what the puppy months are like, here ya go!

Thanks so much for the tips

Thanks so much for the tips Susan! We either got really lucky with Winston or he was a really smart boy because he was potty trained in just 2 months. On the 9 hour ride home from picking him up, he would cry when he had to go. Winston would have been 9 in October. Poor guy had a mass on his aortic valve and passed very suddenly. As you can see from the picture 2 days before, he didn't even look sick. He just started coughing one day, took him to the vet the next and he had cardiac arrest. We miss him so much but think a puppy will help fill the void. We were actually looking into getting a little brother or sister for Winston a couple of months ago. I will definitely be taking lots of pics. I do remember they grow so so fast!

Cupcake and Biscuit are so sweet! Love their butts! :)

Oh yeah...and one thing that

Oh yeah...and one thing that always helped me was the general rule that you take however many months old they are, add 1, and that's about how long they can hold their pee.  So at 1 month old, the puppy will probably be able to hold it for 2 hours.  For the most part, this rule is pretty accurate and helpful.

Another thing that helped me was setting my alarm at night to take the pups out.  I read somewhere that waiting till they whimper in their crate and then taking them out isn't good because it teaches them that they can whine and get out on their terms.  You decide pee time.  And I also read that crate training is the best way to housebreak them because with the exception of Biscuit Doughboy, most dogs won't pee in their bed.

WELCOME!

It's so hard to lose your pet.  I lost 2 bulldogs and it was very difficult for me.  I waited about 15 years before I was able to get another one.  Gracie will be 2 in February and she is the BEST dog ever.  Such a sweetie pie, Im so glad you are adding a new bully to your family.  The puppy stage was a huge shock for me.  I hadn't had to take care of a "baby" in a long time!  my boys are teenagers and hadn't had any pets for 15 years.  WOW what a big change.  It is a lot of work but I found that the time flew by.  Before I knew it she was a year old, potty trained, and all grown up!  I can't wait to see your pics.  here is my big beautiful girl Gracie......she says HI!!!
