Hate so say it but.. New problem

I took his e collar off the clean it and clean him up a bit since he still has some staining and stuff from the whole surgery ordeal. He has this very red area that was almost sort of bloody when I wiped him with the baby wipes under his neck. I figured maybe it was from moisture getting trapped in the e collar a bit (though I've been trying to make sure I keep it dry after he drinks). But the thing is.. It's like this hard area. It's hard like a welt type thing or something. Kind of oval shaped. About an inch long by a half inch wide. It's in his soft extra skin under the neck and its weird cause its like hard. Maybe swollen? and pretty red. Can anybody tell me what this is by my description? It's not something he did because he obviously couldn't scratch that area. For now I cleaned it up and put some cortisone10 on it. Is it just from being moist?

What I mean is

If I try to bend that area between ur fingers it feels stiff like maybe its swollen hard

One possibility obviously

Is that it could be from the e collar rubbing that area these past couple days and it was moist as well. But why is it hard like that?

Sounds like a hot spot

These are caused often from stress but the location probably indicates the e-collar has irritated and contributed to the problem . Keep it clean and dry. Gold Bond Powder often helps. If you can't leave the e-collar off can you possibly pad the area that is rubbing. Or perhaps get a different kind of e-collar. There is one that is soft that works well

Suspect that is from the ecollar

I would go find a soft ecollar tomorrow. Those plastic things are horrible. If that isn't an optin I would cut down the plastic, and wrap his neck with a soft towel then put the collar on.

Is he trying to rub his eyes? I would not have it on him when he is right with you (ie watching tv) and he is sleeping. They will really rub when everything starts healing and gets a little crusty.

Poor guy :(.

Thanks

I think I will go get a new one today. Yes this thing is the worst. I'll see what I can find.

I would give him a break from the collar....ONLY if

you can watch him and make sure he does not rub his eye, like when he's sleeping on the couch with you or something like that.  If you have to leave him even for a minute, put it back on.  You can add some fabric to the bottom to make it smoother, but getting a fabric one is much better for his skin.  It sounds like he has a little hot spot type thing from the collar rubbing.

Maybe when he drinks/ eats you can take off the collar just make sure you put it right back on.

He will tell you

See what he does when you removed the collar. Does he go straight for the eyes? When Ruby had the same procedure I was able to be home with her post-op for over a week so I really kept an eye on her and she was okay/didn't scratch at her eyes during the day. I made her wear the collar at night for sleep and in the morning until the swelling subsided.

Thanks everyone

I went out and got him a "pro cone- soft recovery collar" today. I feel less bad for him now. It's kind of padded and gives a bit so when he crashes it doesn't jam into him. Keeping him nice and dry and new collar should be much nicer to the skin. It actually looks like it may be comfortable when he lays down cause its slightly padded and it smushes instead of the hard plastic. Thanks again.
