This morning, on our commute, Beatrix and I were approached by a young man who wanted to tell us how beautiful she is. He then mentioned that he really wanted a bulldog, but had had one as a kid who died from "throat trouble" when very young, and so he was a bit afraid of getting a bulldog despite loving them. As it turns out, his family is from the Dominican and didn't have a lot of money when he was young -- my guess is that his dog then had an elongated palette that was left untreated. So, we talked about that particular issue, and the importance of doing research and making sure you can afford a dog in both sickness and in health, so to speak, before committing to one. And then onto the subject of rescues -- he said he never saw bulldogs on the regular shelter sites, and so I told him about looking into breed rescues. I mentioned fostering, and his face just lit up! "I'd LOVE to foster!" he exclaimed. :) I recommended he check into Mid Atlantic (who are probably too far away from Boston, but could maybe put him in touch with more local resuces) and also the breeder where I got Beatrix, who also does rescue up here. (In fact, last time I checked their website, they had a note up saying they weren't currently planning any litters, as they really wanted to focus their efforts on the rescue end of things.)
So, anyway, there isn't much point to this story except that I wanted to share a really great "I love your dog" conversation that turned into so much more, and hopefully he'll look into rescues and fostering and find himself a bully to love. :)
In other news, it's gorgeous out, and Beatrix and I went for a short walk. I cut it short because it was SO warm out, and she was all panting, so I wanted to get her inside where it's cool and where she could get a good drink of water. She's now passed out on my office floor, snoring away. Here's a pic of her from our walk, denuding a large branch of all it's smaller branches, which is her favorite thing to do with sticks.
I hope you told him of "us" here at BDW :) :)

beatrix you are just beautiful!
smoochies the scrunchy face
I love talks like that
I've had several of my own, honestly mostly to communicate to people how really challenging it is to have a bulldog. It's great, of course, but NOT for everyone. I go down the list of "minuses". I kind of want to scare people in a way because so many folks just think they are cute but don't realize the emotional, time and financial investment involved.
This guy really sounds "bulldog worthy" and it's great that he took the time to get informed rather than just jump in.
Nice going to Veronica and Beatrix, the bulldog amassadors!!!

The way his face lit up at the idea of fostering was one of his winningest points for me. He said he liked the idea of getting to know the breed via fostering before committing to adopting one himself, so he could really learn what it's like to live with a bulldog.
Now, I REALLY like this guy!
Definitely bulldog worthy!
yup...nothing like wanting to

well done!
It's like a bulldog test drive :)

Bulldogs are great ambassadors
Jack has introduced us to so many new people and brought us closer to some that we've already known. Its neat to see how people gravitate towards these guys.

Fostering
I have been thinking over the last few years about fostering another bully. I love my rattyfat soo much and i felt horrible when my ex and i broke up and he lost his sister in the split. my ex kept her. :( it would be a great temp home for the bully and a friend for my ratboy. how do you go about finding out what all is required to become a foster and all the rules and what not???
