Hi All!!!
Haven't posted in a while due to a busy schedule but I still frequent the forum!!!!!
Good: Sumo is such an amazing boy! 53 pounds of solid Bully at almost 8 months. He's going to be a big boy! Listens very well and was trained super fast. Such a joy to have in our home!!!!
Bad: As of this past Sunday, Sumo has decided to not eat during his regular times. He will eat if we hand feed him but won't inhale his food or get excited for breakfast/dinner like normal. This has caused me a little concern. Spoke with his Vet and she thinks he might be playing a game with his food like a puppy. If this continues for the remainder of the week I need to take him in.
Has anyone experienced something similar??? Does he all of a sudden not like his food? Any input would be much appreciated to maybe put my mind at ease.
Thanks!
Mark
Sometimes they do just get tired of a certain food...
you could try putting a little plain yogurt or shredded cheese on top and see if he eats it. If he does, it's a good sign nothing is wrong. Newman would wolf his food down and he suddenly started walking away. Now he only eats it if there is a little 'treat' on top of it. If he still won't eat though, seeing the vet is a good idea.
Yes, Gizmo has become Finicky lately..and we..
Gizmo is 18 months old -
We have had to try a few things, when she doesnt want to eat at her 'normal' times
1) we put the food out, whatever is left over after 30 minutes gets put up, until the next meal - This tends to work, however she then sometimes 'skips' meals.
2) she is fond of Olive Oil - Which is good for their coat, so a few DROPS (not even a Teaspoon's worth) drizzled over her food, she seems to pick up interest in her dinner.
3) we did a food change from Lamb and Brown Rice to Grain Free Salmon - Thinking all of a sudden she just didnt like her food -This worked for a week or two.
4) we tried 'treats' in her bowl with the kibbles, and she would pick out the treats
We know she doesnt have any serious issues, because she would want to eat anything *BUT* her food. (if she had a serious tummy issue, she wouldnt want to eat at all or atlease eat a very little bit)
I would keep an eye on Sumo, make sure that he is eating, and make sure that he is 'processing' (doing his business in the yard :) ) if not, definately get him to the Vet, these dogs eat ANYTHING they are not suppose to, and it only takes a second *Gulp* its gone :)
That's our experiences, Hope it helps :)
(and post pictures of the little critter, we'd love to see Sumo)
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
Just went through this last week
We have always fed Oliver with a feeding ball he has to push around. He will usually woof down his kibble in about 5 minutes but last week he was not eating at all especially at breakfast. He would eat treats an any kibble that we would shake out for him so his appetite was not an issue and we werent concerned about his health. We just ignored it and waited it out and he would eventually eat his food. A couple days later he is back to normal. We say that he was on a hunger strike but we broke him
You all are the best!!!!
Sumo enjoyed his food tonight with a little shredded cheese on top. Hopefully he will enjoy his food plain after a while. Weird that this happened. His health seems to be okay. Goes #1 and #2 just fine. If I still don't feel okay with everything I will just take him to the Vet. Haven't posted pictures on the site since he came home so I will have to post some new ones soon! Thanks again everyone!
We bribe Maybull
A couple of shakes of parmesian cheese, reight from the shiny green can and she'll eat whatever kibble is in her bowl.
Hey, it's dog food / Way Long.....
Dogs aren't made to eat rice, sweet potatoes, carrotts, peas and any other stuff they put in dog food. imho Even their teeth are made for eating meat. I've heard they are opportunistic omnivores, maybe, but I don't think a dog is gonna chose a potato over meat. So he may eat the potato, but not as his first choice.
If ya need proof, look in your yard. When my dogs ate dog food they pooped out as much as I fed them.
And the breath on a dog that's fed dog food...PU! People talk about kissing their little faces, but I wonder.
Not to be dismissive, [I hope] but to set up feeding rituals seems a little much, when it's meat they want. My boys quit eating dog food on their own also. But they come and cuddle up to me at meal time now, and I treat them a couple times a day with a piece of frozen liver. or Libber as I call it.
I feed 80/10/10.... 80% meat 10% bone 10% organ meat. As close as I can. I give chicken hind quarters for meat and bone, and beef liver for the organ meat. I also give some gizzards and a little salmon oil, some beef, but not much. and any fat or skin off our dinner. All USDA. The chicken is 79 cents a pound, and the liver is under 3 bucks a pound.
They do have tear stains, but I have noticed they are worse in the spring and fall with the pollen. I have to keep after Brothers tail pocket, but right now that's all.
Mean people still suck
